Ed and Lorraine Warren are shown as the movie starts. They share their supernatural and paranormal experiences at a conference. In the next scene, Carolyn and Roger Perron move into a house with their kids. All the kids enter the house, but their frightened dog refuses to go inside. They have five daughters named Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April.

April finds a music box with a mirror under a big tree. While playing 'hide and clap', a wooden board is broken by the other girls. That board was covering a concealed door. Behind it, their father finds a dark storeroom containing a piano and other antiques. Their disturbed dog continuously barks. Next morning, Carolyn has strange bruises on her leg.

Their clocks have stopped at 3:07, and April discovers their dead dog outside. The next scene occurs in Ed Warren's occult museum, where a reporter is interviewing Ed. Warren informs the reporter that everything in the museum is haunted or used in witchcraft. The spirits attach themselves to these items. Ed then talks about the Annabelle doll.

They explain that a demonic entity uses the doll as a conduit. Back at the farmhouse, the clocks stop working exactly at 3:07. Strange events occur at that exact time. Someone pulls Christine's foot while she sleeps. She also smells a foul odor. Cindy sleepwalks into Andrea's room... ...and mysteriously bangs her head against the wardrobe. The next day, another bruise appears on Carolyn.

When Roger goes outside, he sees a dead pigeon fall from the tree. He is astonished. This event indicates the presence of a demonic power. April and Carolyn are home alone. April is seen talking to an invisible entity. April asks to play hide and clap. When Carolyn goes to Andrea's room to find her...
