He's one of the most polarizing figures in history. A hero to some, a villain to others. He's categorically misunderstood, and deeply controversial. But if there's one thing everyone can agree on, it's that he was an unbelievable force on the battlefield. The great British General Wellington reportedly said that having this guy in command was like adding 40,000 extra
troops to your army and that he was the greatest soldier of all time. But if you look beyond the battlefield, his life gets even more interesting. A complete micromanager, perfectionist, intellectual, letterwriting workaholic. And despite being born over 250 years ago, the details of his life are still incredibly fascinating and relevant today. I'm of course talking about
Napoleon, one of the most famous people in human history. But why is he so famous? Is it just because he won a bunch of battles? No. There are lots of generals that won a bunch of battles and aren't even close to Napoleon's level. Was he an evil wararmonger? No. He lived in a time in Europe when war was
practically a continental pastime. The century leading up to his era contained like half a dozen huge wars. Napoleon was just better at war. It took multiple coalitions of the strongest European powers all uniting to take him down because he threatened them so much. And if he took away all his military accomplishments, he would still be
regarded as one of the most effective politicians of all time. Now, that's not to say he didn't have flaws. Despite being a true Renaissance man and a genius, he was incredibly insecure, made some of the most baffling mistakes, and got millions of people killed. But he was also incredibly charismatic, and had a big impact on almost everyone he met.
