In October 1941, age 27, he was posted to Mauthausen as a camp doctor. He was there 6 weeks. In that time he picked out the healthy ones, opened them

up and pulled organs out to see how long they lasted. With the camp pharmacist, he injected liquids into prisoners' hearts to see which killed fastest. Hundreds died. A man named Karl Lauter worked in the camp hospital and later told a court that of all the doctors there, Heim was the worst. He described

a day when an 18-year-old Jewish boy came in with a bad foot. Heim asked him about himself and the boy said he had been a footballer and a swimmer. So Heim put him under, opened him up and took him apart. Then he had the head cut off and boiled clean because he wanted the

skull for his desk. It had good teeth. After the war, an American court tried the pharmacist from the heart experiments and hanged him. Heim walked because someone had gone through his SS file and swapped Mauthausen for a different posting. He set up as a women's doctor in Baden-Baden for 15 years. Then West Germany started going

after its own war criminals and in 1962, somebody tipped him off that a warrant was coming. He was gone before it arrived. In Cairo, he became Tariq Farid Hussein, a Muslim convert who prayed five times a day and lived in a cheap hotel. He died of cancer there in 1992 and his son took the papers home without
