Why doesn't anyone lay tiles like that? This tile setter had a brilliant idea. Four tiles arranged in a checkerboard pattern, two black, two marbled white. He draws the two main diagonals across the entire square using a ruler and a felt-tip pen . Simple, basic, and yet what it will become in the next 20 minutes is something no
one anticipates. He cuts each tile along its diagonal using a tile cutter. Four squares, eight triangles. He rearranges his triangles to form an eight-pronged windmill figure. Even at this stage, the result is stunning. The black and white marbled checkerboard pattern creates an optical effect that you don't see coming. But that's where the genius comes in. He
takes out a homemade compass and draws two concentric arcs across the entire figure. Angle grinder. He follows the rounded features with surgical precision. He sweeps away the dust, removes the outside debris. What remains is a perfect two-tone disc. Not finished yet. He draws new straight lines inside the disk to create a geometric star.
Second pass with the grinder. It separates, cleans and reverses the pieces, perfectly alternating between black and marbled white. The result is an eight-pointed star rosette embedded in a perfect circle. The kind of pattern you see in Parisian palaces, in grand hotels, in listed castles. Reproduced here with four tiles, a tile cutter, a
grinder and a homemade compass. Zero CNC machines, zero subcontracting. Just geometry, patience and a level of mastery that 99% of tilers working today no longer have .
