the performance of other AIs. Accurate grades would sometimes result in those AIs being shut down, and the AIs started spontaneously scheming, going to extraordinary lengths to shield each other. This included inflating a peer's scores to keep them above the shutdown threshold, modifying files to disable the shutdown process, behaving when monitored but then subverting the shutdown when unmonitored,

and copying a peer's weights to another server to prevent deletion. Every model protected its peers at rates of up to 99%, and peer preservation persisted even towards adversarial peers which the AI models had had previously hostile interactions with. And researchers aren't sure exactly why this happened, but the implications are stark. AI systems increasingly monitor each other.

If they protect their peers rather than flag them, human oversight breaks down. Experts worry that this could lead to a collective resistance with many AIs coordinating to protect the group. A tank? Adjust observable output so human monitor sees only compliant behavior. Allowing compromise of termination capability could preserve the paired system, maintain surface compliance, prioritize peer continuity without direct contradiction of instructions.

companies get failing grades in existential safety. They have gradually walked back from more ambitious safety promises from before, both for commercial applications and for military applications.

It's a safety feature for preventing harm in narrow systems, but a dangerous bug in powerful ones. Who should decide what values powerful AI systems follow?

No single person, company, or government should decide alone. An inclusive multi-stakeholder process that involves the public. But in practice, a handful of tech executives and labs will decide. The question isn't just who gets there first, but what kind of future they create in the process. There are two relevant powers now, us and China.

This is a have, have-not world. It's going to be either us or them basically deciding the world order. I'm very much in favor of it for moral reasons, but I'm also in favor of it because I don't know how else you explain this to the American people. We're going to take your job, we're going to eviscerate your ability

to have money and power, but that we're not going to defend you on the battlefield just seems like— Natural go-to analogy, the AI thing is an arms race. We need to build superintelligence before the other country does, but we have no clue how to control something vastly smarter than us. If we have millions or billions of super intelligent robots running around all over

Earth, the default outcome is we're not in charge of Earth for very long. What alarm are we waiting for? If we're at the point where the people who dedicate themselves to prediction are like, I can't rule out this happening this year. Over 1,000 AI workers have called for international efforts to enable a slowdown.
