What you're seeing now is footage from the China GT race held in Shanghai on September 5th. At this point, the race had been going for about 20 minutes, and most of the cars were already on lap 7. That's when the number 33 BMW and the number 37 Ferrari started fighting for position. Both drivers were trying to find a chance to get past the other,
and during that battle they ended up making contact. Now, collisions are pretty common in racing. I watch these races quite often, and there's usually some kind of contact during a race. The problem is that these cars are moving incredibly fast, averaging around 240 to 250 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the drivers are all competing at a very high level,
so the cars often stay packed very close together. When you have so many cars running side by side at that kind of speed, even one small collision can quickly turn into a chain reaction. Car A hits Car B, B hits C, C hits D, and it keeps going. Sometimes, you can even see more than a dozen cars
caught up in the same incident. So when the number 33 BMW and the number 37 Ferrari collided, the crash also ended up involving the number 91 car nearby.
The impact hit the number 91 car right around the side of its fuel tank, and the number 91 driver was incredibly unlucky. He wasn't even fighting with another car, but his car suddenly burst into flames. In racing, fire is probably the most dangerous thing that can happen. If you watch motorsports often, you'll see cars flip several times through the air,
or even break apart completely. But sometimes, the driver can still climb out and walk away almost like nothing happened. Why? Because modern race cars are built to very high safety standards. A car may look like it's falling apart, but the main safety cell around the driver is extremely strong and designed not to collapse.
