Northeast England at the turn of the century by examining an area that had seen the impact of globalization on traditional male industry such as heavy manufacturing wiler noted that there was an emergence of a new form of criminal subculture one that focused on the nighttime economy in Sunderland and surrounding areas this had once been dominated by
traditional mail Industries such as mining steel production and car manufacturer winow noted there had been significant impact on the economy of the Northeast from the privatization of Industries and the globalization of heavy industry this had disproportionately impacted on male employment in the area with many traditional male Industries in Decline wiow argued that employment in heavy
industry had given males the opportunity to prove their masculinity and that this gave them status amongst their peers with these opportunities diminishing or being completely removed this created a crisis of masculinity in the area and as a consequence males look to assert the masculinity through other forms much as in traditional subcultural strain theories
winow conducted his research through the use of observations working as a Dorman in bars and clubs he observed the activities of males in work and through sessions in the gym wiow noticed that males he observed saw the work on the doors was part of a viable career opportunity and that they invested in these careers
