If you spit into a glass, and [music] just think about swallowing it, well, that sounds pretty disgusting. But, you swallow around a liter of spit every day in your mouth. So, why aren't you disgusted by that? Well, your brain has a built-in disgust system, and it pays close attention to where things have
been. Inside your mouth, saliva is exactly where it's supposed to be. But, once you spit it out, it's suddenly exposed to everything around you, including germs and other contaminants. Because disgust evolved partly to protect us from swallowing things that could make us sick, well, your brain [music] starts treating that same saliva as something you probably shouldn't put
back inside.
