[music] I have dedicated my life to the struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination and also against black domination. I have championed the ideal of a democratic and free society, [music] in which all people can live together, in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal I hope to live for and

see realized. But, Your Honor, if necessary, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die. After uttering these words before the court, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent 27 years in prison, 18 of them [music] in this tiny cell in the Roven Island maximum security prison. When he regained his freedom, [musician] was already

71 years old. A large part of the white population feared what would happen when he came out. At the same time, millions of South Africans oppressed by Apart Heath hoped that he would lead the final fall of a regime that for decades had segregated and brutally repressed the black population. He had founded an armed organization, had

been convicted of sabotage, and 5 years earlier had rejected his own freedom because he was required to renounce his principles. Four years after walking through that prison door, Mandela became president of the country that had imprisoned him, and then he had to make a much more difficult decision than defeating his enemies. Decide what to do with them. He could

use his power to settle scores, as a large part of the population demanded. It could feed the rage [music] accumulated over generations. He could even lead the violence that ran through the streets to establish himself as the new leader of South Africa. But what he did was write a different ending to teach the world a lesson.
