welcome to this tutor to you sociology topic video looking at beliefs in society focusing on religious participation in the uk evidence suggests there is a long-term decline in religious participation in the uk which can be seen as evidence of secularization however more in-depth analysis of the trends show that there are varying trends in religious participation across

different religions age groups ethnicity and gender generally speaking there has been a decline in participation in more traditional religions but a growth in religious diversity in the uk and in this video we're going to look at several sources that highlight these trends in the 21st century the most recent published census data of

religious practices is from 2011 with the 2021 census due to be published later this year the main trends from the 2011 census show that 59.5 percent of the uk population identified as being christian in 2011 which was a decline from the previous census in 2001 which reported 72 percent of the population as being christian

over the same period those indicating they had no religious affiliation increased from 15 percent in 2001 to 25.7 percent in 2011. and this trend continues as we look at more recent data the 2011 census also showed a growth in religious diversity with islam hinduism sikhism and buddhism all showing increases from 2001 to 2011.
