So, if this were back in 2011, [music] this is what we would call an S update. The iPhone 18 Pro is basically an iPhone 17 Pro with a chip update, a camera upgrade, and better battery life, plus some new colors to make sure people know it's the new one. That's an S update if

we've ever seen one. And I think it's tempting to be disappointed in that, but after using it for the past week, I actually think it's underrated. I know, I know. Cue all the shill comments. What do you mean a $1,200 iPhone is underrated? I said underrated, not underpriced. It's expensive, but it's underrated. For two straight years now,

the Pro iPhone has gone under the radar and sort of lived in the shadow of Apple trying their riskier new ideas on other phones. Last year, the iPhone Air stole a spotlight. That's about the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. This year, it's all about the first folding iPhone, the Duo. The flagship pro iPhone has not

had a groundbreaking new feature in over a decade now. Like, that's what the other models are for. But in the Pro iPhone, you will find simply the best iPhone that they make. and it's been quietly getting really good. So, let's start with the camera system, right? Really, there isn't much physically new. We're looking at the same three cameras

as last year's 17 Pro. A 48 megapixel primary camera, 48 megapixel ultrawide, and 48 megapixel 4x telephoto. But the main camera now gets this variable aperture lens. So, for the entire history of the iPhone and basically every other smartphone that's not made by Samsung, smartphones have had fixed aperture lenses. You know, you'd see

that aperture as one of the camera stats. It would be like f2.2 or f2.0 or f1.8. Fellow camera nerds already know all about this, but essentially the lower the number, the bigger the relative aperture and the more light that lens is letting through to hit that sensor. And that's what we all want, the

biggest aperture possible for the most light hitting the sensor most of the time. But my fellow photographer nerds also already know that sometimes you want a little more in focus. So you can always open up the aperture and have it wide open to let more light in to hit the sensor. But also now the background is blurrier. But

if you want more in focus and you want it to be more sharp, you can stop down that lens to something like this, which of course is letting less light in, but is now more in focus, a sharper overall image. And then of course there's a middle ground. So the iPhone 18 Pro gets

a variable aperture that opens all the way up to a new maximum of f1.48, which is awesome, but it can also stop down in stages to f1.8, f2.8, 8 or f4 when you want to. And apparently third party apps will be able to do infinite stages. So smoothly moving through this range. Anyway, how much of a difference

does this make? Well, from a whole bunch of photos I've taken in a whole bunch of different situations on this phone, it actually doesn't really make a huge difference. It's pretty subtle. Like this is wide open, f1.48, and this is f4. And you can see more is in focus here with that background. Again, f1.48,

f4, more sharpness, deeper plane of focus. It's one of the more subtle things that you can change about a photo. So, you know, can the regular person tell the difference between f1.48 and f4 at first glance? Not really. But also, can the regular person tell the difference between 4,800 Kelvin and 5400 Kelvin white balance? Also, not really.

And the difference between a 60th of a second and a 48th of a second shutter speed is also pretty subtle. But that's what these pro tools are all about in my opinion. helping creative people make what they're trying to make slightly easier and giving them more control over more parts of the image to do that. So

adding that variable aperture is just one more thing you can control. Whether it's to bring the background slightly more into focus or have slightly sharper overall images or even to mess with the little point lights making artistic looking starburst shapes when you stop down thanks to the six aperture blades not being a perfect circle. Little stuff

like that. For those wondering, auto mode seems to mostly default to f1.48 48 or f1.8, the brighter two apertures, just to let as much light in as possible pretty much all the time. And I never saw it actually automatically close beyond that. But that doesn't actually surprise me. And the new f1.48 max

aperture kind of flew under the radar. That is really nice. And it means shutter speeds can be faster, you can freeze action a little more, and ISOs can be lower for slightly less noise in low light. So why is it underrated? Well, as you can see, it's not making a huge difference on this camera with this

generation of phone, but variable apertures make a bigger difference the bigger the sensor is, as you can see with this huge sensor here. And if you've been subscribed for a bit, you also know I've reviewed some other phones in the past couple years with these absolutely huge 1-in type sensors. Just absolutely massive, right? And on

those, the natural depth of field from the photos they take is super shallow. But we've also noticed it's sometimes too shallow. Like I'll take a photo of a close-up subject and it it'll look kind of bad because the object isn't even entirely in focus. And sometimes autofocus is a bit slower because the

plane of focus is so shallow it'll miss and it'll have to hunt a little bit. And so that variable aperture feature would be awesome on those sensors. So if this feature sticks around long enough until the iPhone gets to those much bigger sensors, that's when it becomes a huge win. So ideally on the way there we can

see it start to get more and more refined and maybe some other camera phones bring it back too. Shout out to the Galaxy S9. Apple taking a page out of Google's book and adding more granular pro controls to the camera app of just the Pro phones honestly makes a bigger difference to the user experience

than any of the hardware in my opinion. They've always had the same simple camera app across every iPhone which I think kind of hamstrung the Pro phones for a while. So, you'd always count on grabbing like the best third party camera app to actually get the most out of the camera. But now, this stock

camera app is great. You can hold down this bar and add whatever you want up here in whatever order you want. Shutter speed, format, there's manual focus, and oh my god, there's finally manual white balance. Now, that is so sick. So, hey Apple, as long as you're still in the mood for making these pro phones more

pro, I have a couple more suggestions. Uh, one, can you let us while we're recording log video, can we get a Rex 709 preview of what it will look like so we can get exposure right instead of looking like the flat log as we're recording? That would be nice. Um, also, can you finally let us record 8K video,

please? The sensor is big enough. It's 48 megapixels. Just 8K 30. You even just added in iOS 27 this new setting where we can set a limit to how much storage we want our ProRes footage to take up so it never goes over that maximum. I swear Apple, this is now the perfect time to

add that 8K. It'll be great. Now, okay, we got to talk about this new chip. The 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max have the new A20 Pro chip inside. Side note, are they going to sync up the chip name and the phone name ever? Cuz 18 and 20 and the 1921, am I the only one bothered by

that? Maybe. Anyway, uh this is a new 2nmter chip inside alongside the simultaneously announced M6. And after using this phone for the past week, I really do think this chip is highly underrated. Now, I could try to show this with benchmark scores, you know, that shows peak improvement in power, of course, but that's not the whole story.

I could also try to show this with, you know, whipping around iOS and multitasking and how fast things open, but honestly, it's it's fast on every new iPhone. that isn't impressive anymore. I think the best way to show this is by seeing all of that and getting a battery life that's meaningfully longer in the same size

phone. Typically with an S update or, you know, the chip update, we see like here's the bump in performance. You know, it's just more powerful. It's not going to be more efficient or have better battery life, but okay, more power. Great. Or you'll see like here's more efficiency. It's not going to be

more powerful, but at least the battery life is longer. Cool. But to see both in one chip update get significantly better. That's the 2nmter effect right there. You know, behind the scenes, they've talked a little bit about this, but they moved the DRAM off of the CPU where it was stacked before and put it

next to it. So, it's still really close by, but that lets them put this new three times surface area vapor chamber directly on the CPU, which lets them cool it much better. So, is the power in the chip reaching literally M1 and M2 levels going to matter for most everyday people? Absolutely not. But hey, at the

highest end, there are some people doing heavy gaming for long sessions or even like me shooting a ton of 4K video outside when it's really hot. I can't tell you how hot the iPhone has gotten while shooting autofocus videos in the summer here in New Jersey. But having this huge new vapor chamber and

connected mid-frame for better cooling definitely helps with that. That's what the Pro is for. And then obviously bursty stuff is still going to be great. It's a modern iPhone, but now like exporting videos is significantly faster. image processing is faster and actually the AI stuff. So now that the neural engine is doubled, it is actually

running this like I know it's just Siri and I I honestly didn't think it would matter that much for this, but uh Siri has been running pretty slow on some even some newer phones like even the iPhone 16 which was built from the ground up for AI but even on those phones it's running kind of slow but it

is running a lot of that stuff where Siri has to work on device much faster. So, that's another thing that's nice. Honestly, this chip gets me excited for the next generation MacBook Neo. That's how good it is. Because the MacBook Neo runs the A18 Pro, the bend A18 Pro with 8 gigs of RAM. This A20 Pro with 12 gigs

of RAM would kill in the MacBook Neo. It's essentially an M1 level chip. So, I I'm excited for that. If you haven't already watched my whole video on the ridiculous scale of these processors where I shrink down and walk around on these chips, I'll link that below the like button. It took a lot to work on

that and make it. It's one of my favorite things we've ever done. But that was based on the last generation's 3nm architecture. This is a new 2nmter node that just proves Moore's law still isn't dead. And we're closing in on transistors the size of individual atoms. It's pretty crazy. So, okay, the last big bullet point for this new

iPhone was them touting the longest battery life ever in iPhones, which, okay, yeah, I would hope that you're improving your battery life on your highest end phones every year. Uh, but if you remember last year, they finally did the thing that we are all hoping for. The iPhone Air really freed up the

iPhone 17 Pro to be the most pro version of the iPhone yet, and they just went ahead and made it thicker and heavier and gave it the biggest batteries the iPhone's ever had and was pretty universally praised for that. So, the fact that these 18 Pros make another significant leap is actually kind of

interesting. On stage, they were saying all these numbers, you know, 36 hours of video playback, 30 hours of mixed usage, blah blah blah. I've that's never meant very much to me. But the stat that did stick to me was that the 18 Pro has the same battery life expectation as the 17 Pro Max.

And it does. I have been mostly testing the smaller 18 Pro all week. And turns out this is easily a day and a half phone without charging overnight. And it can sometimes be stretched into a two-day long battery life if you have like a chill light day. still with all my high brightness use and all my photo

taking CarPlay for 2 hours every day, everything. That is pretty sick. But the thing is, the battery is not bigger. It's maybe it's like 3% bigger or something like that. But the point is, it is not some massively larger or more dense battery that is making this better battery performance. It's the A20 Pro

still. It is all the efficiency gains from the 2nmter architecture. It's it's silicon chops instead of silicon carbon. Imagine if they did both. But yeah, they haven't actually changed much with the battery. What they did change is they added faster charging and it is actually significant. After finally running this thing dead, I plugged it in on a 67 watt

charger and this thing pulled 45 watts for quite a while. So, their 7 hours of video playback after 5 minutes of wired charging seems legit. And the Pro Max, by the way, actually does have about a 10% larger battery capacity than the last generation. So, it's seems like it's right around 5,500 mAh, which

another side note, it's kind of crazy that Apple doesn't just tell us, right? I mean, you're a it's a smartphone. You're a tech company. Just just tell us. We have to wait for someone to disassemble the phone to actually look and see what the capacity is. It's funny. In Europe, they have the SIM card

tray version of the phone, but they are uh required to submit like the energy labels, so we get the actual numbers. So, we know uh it's 45,56 mAh for the Pro and 5,391 for the Pro Max. Great. Uh the US gets the ESIM only version, so we think it'll be roughly a few% more, but

again, we just have to wait and see. It'll be around 5500. Shout out to the EU. There's some other little things that are new on this phone, too. The C2 modem, that should also contribute to efficiencies and battery life. And new colors. You've probably already seen this new burgundy all over the place.

I'm not gonna lie, I just think it's ugly. I think it's an ugly color. But there's also a new glacier blue color, which is sort of a light sky blue. I think it's nice. And there's also a new matte black, which I've been using. Shows a bit more fingerprints than I was hoping, but I don't care. This is the

one I'm using it. I love it. This is the greatest color they've ever made. And the dynamic island also does get a little bit smaller for the first time ever. They've done this by moving the infrared Face ID sensor, which used to be in the middle, uh, over to the top left corner and it's behind the display.

And this actually makes a lot of sense. I'm surprised they didn't do it earlier, honestly. This is a sensor that doesn't need to be a super high resolution, unlike a selfie camera. So, they can just cut out some of the pixels to shine the infrared through and it's just as effective down there. And the fact that

you need a microscope to see it at that slightly lower pixel density in the corner is a pretty good testament to a successful implementation there. It literally only caught my eye in direct sunlight maybe once just noticing a little faded circle in the corner. So yeah, now three live activities fit up at the top instead of two.

Game changer for somebody. At the end of the day, my take on this phone is it really isn't surprising at all. Of course it isn't. It's the pro iPhone for years. It's been the one that's kind of treated as like a semifinished product and it just gets these slow evolutions over time. No crazy risks. The last Pro

iPhone was one of the bigger changes they've made in a while. It has, you know, obviously the new metal design and the thicker new chassis with the bigger batteries and the camera plateau, but even a lot of the little things like the new 3000 nits max brightness and the PWM dimming and the anti-reflective coating.

So, if that was a big tick in the tick tock cycle of updates, uh, then this is a pretty good talk update. The 2nmter chip is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here. And the variable aperture camera, it's subtle, if anything, but it has potential future value as cameras evolve. So, is the iPhone 18 Pro

perfect? No. Is it expensive? Hell yeah. Is it exactly what we were expecting? Also, yeah. And there's some value to that, too.
