The Horrifying End of the World’s Deepest Diving Submarine

The history of submarining is, to put it bluntly, about as horrific as it gets. Not only are the conditions, even at the best of times, pretty alien, but at the worst of times, there are few scarier places than being trapped in a sealed metal container hundreds of feet beneath the ocean. Whether it's fire with nowhere to run, or water rushing in,

causing the sub to sink uncontrollably. There's also crush depth where the pressure outside becomes so immense that a sub will simply implode. The list is almost endless. And few navies have subjected their sailors to more of this undersea suffering than the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, the Soviet Union built a submarine unlike anything else in its fleet.

Known as the K-278, its titanium hull allowed it to descend more than a kilometer beneath the surface, deeper than any combat submarine ever built. But on April 7th, 1989, while the K-278 was patrolling beneath the Norwegian Sea, something happened deep inside the sub that would lead to one of the most harrowing disasters in submarine history.

The events that followed are almost unbelievable, so as always, viewer discretion is strongly advised.
