People who beat the system so badly, the rules had to change. One day in 1984, an unemployed ice cream truck driver from Ohio named Michael Larson was watching Press Your Luck and noticed something strange. Press Your Luck was a popular CBS game show where contestants hit a button that stopped a spinning board to
win cash or prizes. The board was supposed to be random, but after studying the recordings, Michael found that the board had only five different patterns with two squares landing on bigger money prizes almost every time. So, he memorized the patterns, the timings, and then he drove to Los Angeles and got on the show. He knew
exactly when to hit the button every time, and when it was all said and done, Larson had won $110,237, the largest win in game show history at the time. CBS thoroughly investigated, but [music] couldn't find a single rule he'd broken, so they had to pay him. After that, the producers had completely overhauled the board and added dozens of
new patterns to make sure something like this could never happen again. Michael didn't cheat the game, he just understood it better than the people who created it.
