I've tried thousands of shoes over the years, and if it has taught me anything, it's that more shoes doesn't really mean better style. You need to find the right shoes instead. Shoes I really think make or break an outfit, but you don't need unlimited pairs for that. I really think you only need six. So, I'm going to tell

you exactly what they are, why I think you need them, and I'm going to give you some styling ideas so you can start getting your cost per wear straight out of the box. Starting with the most comfortable and functional pair of shoes you'll ever own, sneakers. And I'm putting sneakers as number one because

for the majority of you watching this video, they are going to be the most worn shoe in your closet. Because I think at the core of it, a truly great wardrobe comes down to two things: comfort and function. Let's be real, as cute as something is, if it's not comfortable, then you're probably not

going to wear it. So sneakers truly do hit that mark perfectly. So, now you're probably wondering, "Well, Christina, great, but what sneaker do I choose?" If you're just starting out and want something super versatile that you can wear all year round, I recommend a clean, minimal white leather pair of sneakers. So, something like an Adidas

Samba, a Stan Smith, some leather Vans, or even a Converse sneaker. If you want the most versatility though, I say go for a leather sneaker because that way you can wear them all year round. Plus, they're going to be easier to clean versus a canvas one that could read a little bit more casual and summery. But

you know what? I also know that you've been told to get a plain white sneaker a million times at this point. So, I want to offer you a few more suggestions. A colored sneaker like the Adidas Samba or Gazelle can add a lot more personality and in my opinion can go with so much

more in your wardrobe than you might think. You can style them like this, like this, or like this. And I think it looks so cool. If color is not really your bag, then you can also go metallic. But nowadays, I feel like you can wear sneakers with almost anything, going almost anywhere. You can wear them to

work, going out for a coffee. They're perfect to run errands in. And I love seeing them styled with casual outfits like denim jeans and a t-shirt all the way back to a trouser or even a skirt or dress. They definitely just aren't meant for casual clothing, but I think a sneaker is a great tool to make an

outfit feel more laid-back. And that's how I think you can use them in your wardrobe with the most range. And I know you're going to ask me this, chunky sneaker or not chunky sneaker. And you know what? I don't think there is a wrong answer. It's like taking oat milk in your coffee versus whole milk. It's

personal preference. But I like to think of a chunky sneaker more as something that I would use if I want to add a bit more heft and weight to my outfit. Then I think a sneaker like a New Balance 530 or a Solomon would work really well. But if that's not so much your style and you

want the most versatility and range from your wardrobe, then that's where I'd actually recommend a slimmer sneaker like this. I just feel like a slimmer silhouette does lend itself to more outfits and more styling opportunities. But at the same time, you also may be more creative than me. So, at the end of

the day, go with what you like. But you know what? As much as a good sneaker really can do it all most of the time, sometimes you're just going to want something with a little more structure. And that's where some good loafers come in. So, I actually like to think of a loafer as a sneaker like polished older

brother. He's structured. He's easy, but still refined. Well, maybe not the older brother. He's just like the hot sibling who has their life together. They dress up an outfit with basically zero effort. And they can add some really cool contrast to a more casual, laid-back look. You've heard of the wrong shoe theory, right? Well, at the end of the

day, it's all about contrast. When you pair something that feels a little unexpected and out of place in an otherwise typical outfit, then it just makes the look feel a lot cooler and more intentional. So, the loafer has quickly become my favorite version of that. It's a little nerdy, kind of preppy, a little masculine, and that

somehow makes it really cool. I love wearing mine with relaxed denim and oversized button-up and even leggings. It just adds that little bit of extra structure without trying too hard. Which leads us to ask the question, which type of loafer should you buy? Well, for the last few years, the chunky loafer has

really been having a moment. And you know what? If that's your style and you love wearing them, I think go for it. But in my opinion, they've always just felt a little bit more bottomheavy and just kind of a little less timeless than something like a more classic slim penny loafer. So, if you really want the best

bang for your buck, I think go for a slimmer, more classic silhouette. My personal favorites have been these ones from GH Bass. And if you have the budget, I really do like the Gucci loafers, the ones that come in the soft leather, but that's because the hard leather ones chew up my feet. Remember,

comfort. Comfort's very [music] important. But I think these ones come at a really great mid-range price point. They're comfortable. They're easy to break in, and they got a lot of great reviews. People seem to love these. And some other tips if you're in the market is just to make sure that you avoid the

loafers that are made of plastic, particularly the ones that you'll find from a lot of fast fashion retailers. And that's because plastic can't really break in. It's tough. It's not breathable and it's just going to wreck your feet. So, if you're in the market for a loafer, I really recommend going for leather. And if these are just a bit

too classic for your taste, then I still think you can have a lot of fun with a loafer. Try getting them in a fun patent leather in a cool color like this. Or if you're really edgy and avantgard in your style, then you can even go for a tabby silhouette like this. But a loafer

doesn't necessarily just have to be worn with a suit or to the office. They really dress down into street wear so easily. And I just like to think of them as the shoe that I reach for when I want a sneaker, but I just want to feel that little bit of extra polish. And that has

made it so easy to style these in my closet. Okay, but now we've got to talk about the category of shoes that you're going to wear just as much, if not more, than your sneakers and your loafers. And that's a good pair of ballet flats. I think the knee-jerk reaction when we want to feel a bit more feminine and

pretty in our outfits is to go for a heel, but I say don't sleep on the ballet flat. They're cute, they're sweet, they're pretty, and they're easy to walk in. And let me show you exactly how they can transform an outfit. Take this really simple outfit of jeans and a t-shirt. This is one of my favorite

everyday outfits to wear. But if I reach for a sneaker, sometimes it can just leave me feeling a little flat and just a touch too casual. But swap in a cute pair of ballet flats or Mary Janes, and you can see right away with that just one swap how much more elevated and

polished and intentional this outfit can look. And you didn't even have to try that hard. If you're looking for a really comfortable but still minimal and chic ballet flat, some of my favorites have been from Everlane. I love these square toed Mary Janes from 80. I have a few pairs of these. If you want

something with a bit more support or if you want a wide foot option, check out these from Poppy Barley. They are incredibly comfortable. Like, I can't even tell you. And I know this one might be a bit controversial, but I really like these Margella Tabby flats. I don't know. Don't yuck on somebody's yum is

all I got to say. The point here is to get the functionality and walkability that you need from a shoe without having to sacrifice style. They really do go with everything and I think will quickly become a go-to favorite in your shoe rotation. Okay, but before we get into the next shoe essential, I just want to

go over a couple of things that I think most people don't really think about, but once you learn this, it's going to make the biggest difference when you're getting dressed and choosing what shoe to wear. It's such a simple thing that I really wish I learned sooner because it has been such a game changer when

getting dressed. And that is knowing what shoe color to go with. [music] Because I know you're going to be thinking, "Oh, okay, great. I'll just get all of these shoes in black. Black goes with everything. It's so easy to style. I'll be one and done. But that is actually a big mistake for a lot of

people and a lot of outfits. Black can sometimes feel a bit too heavy and it can boil down to the entire reason that your outfit feels off when getting dressed. So, if you're on the market for any of these shoe essentials, I would encourage you to think about a couple of other colors instead of black,

especially if you own a lot of black shoes already. And I think you're going to get a lot more fun and range out of your closet and your outfits if you add a pair in white, [music] in brown, and in red. Let me explain. White I like to think of as kind of like your neutral

pop of color. It brightens up a look and it really brings a lot of lightness to an outfit. I think the common technique in getting dressed is to match your top to your bottom. But if you're wearing black, especially, just try it. Try swapping in a white shoe instead and just see how it changes the outfit. I

think it just adds a little bit of something extra, something interesting, something unexpected. And I actually prefer it. I don't think your shoes always need to match your top every single time. And that's where a white shoe comes in. Next, let's talk about the red shoe. This is just your vibrant accent. It's your colorful pop of color,

as it were. [laughter] And if it's not red, then go for the color that you like. But I think having that pop of color is just so much fun. I know it's so easy to wear an all black everything outfit, but just swap out the black shoe for a red one and just see how the vibe

changes. And brown, I think, is the most underrated shoe color to have in your wardrobe because I like to think of it as your softer [music] neutral. It gives you the same grounding as black does in an outfit, but it's just a little bit softer. It's not as harsh. And especially if you prefer to wear lighter

colors or you're a lighter colored type, like a summer or a spring, then you're probably going to find that brown feels a lot more balanced as your main neutral than black. Anyway, so next time that you're getting dressed, instead of changing the entire outfit when it's off or not working, try swapping out the

shoe color and just see how everything changes. All right, so now that we've covered color, let's get into the next essential, and that is boots. My favorite. So, I think everyone needs at least one good pair of boots in their closet. When I was prepping this video, I was really debating on recommending a

classic ankle boot like [music] this. But the more I thought about it, I think you're actually going to get the most versatility out of a tall ankle boot like this. Because this video is all about getting the best value out of the fewest [music] number of pieces. And that's where I think a tall boot really

checks all the boxes. You can wear them with mini skirts or dresses. You can wear them with widelegg trousers, and you can even wear them under jeans or over jeans if they're slim enough for a different look. I prefer a pair with a slight heel, one that's still walkable, and with a pointed toe because it's so

elongating, but you can totally go for a flat if you prefer. [music] Some of my favorite pairs have been this style from Dear Francis. I don't think they make it anymore, so I will leave a few alternatives linked down below. And if you need something for a wider calf, then you will love these ones from Poppy

Barley. [music] And you know what? If a tall boot is not your thing, go for a simple ankle boot, a Chelsea boot like this, and you're going to love it. Okay, but even the best pair of boots does have its limits. Sometimes you're just going to want something that feels a bit more refined and shows a little bit of

skin, [music] and that is where a good dressy heel comes in. And no, we're not talking about the 5-in platforms or sky-high stilettos. Also, don't worry, I cleaned the bottom of all of these. instead. That is where a good sling back or kitten heel comes in. I love a kitten heel because they just give you that

little bit of extra height that you might be looking for without, you know, having that whole I can't feel my toes tradeoff at the end of the night. So, it's a win-win for me. In terms of silhouette, I do love a pointed toe because it keeps that elongating effect throughout the leg. But, if that's not

your vibe, then I love an open toe strappy sandal like this. Or if you want something with a more round or almond toe, think like a Chanel strappy sandal kind of vibe like this. And this type of shoe does not have to be limited to a special occasion. Of course, I'm going to wear these to a wedding or a big

event. But if you're just looking for something extra that a flat, a sneaker, or a loafer, or even a boot just isn't going to give you, try a sling back. Try a strappy heel, a strappy sandal, and I think it's going to look so good. Out of all of these shoes, my favorites and the

most comfortable have actually been these ones from Sam Edelman. They are affordable, [music] they're easy to walk in, and they come in so many different colors and styles. So, I will leave a few options linked down below for [music] you. And if you're looking at your shoes as styling tools in your wardrobe, this silhouette

is what you're going to want to reach for when you're just looking for that little bit of extra refinement or if you want some height or even if you just want to show that little bit of extra skin. Sometimes you don't want a closed toe shoe for a certain outfit or a look

that you're going for. So having these kind of options in your closet is really going to go farther than you think. And you know, no shoe collection is complete without an easy slip-on sandal or slide because again, at the end of the day, we are all about comfort and [music] function on this channel without

sacrificing style. So, I think it's important to have something that you can just slip on and run out the door in all seasons. My go-to pair all summer has been this pair from Ameory and this pair from Tiki. I love the minimalistic design of these. And I think the square toe silhouette of these just makes them

feel a bit more modern and polished, even though they're just a flip-flop. So, if you're looking to add a really easy sandal in your wardrobe, these are the kind of details that I like to look for. I don't know, they just give me Olson twin vibes. And if you don't like your toes out, then swap out the sandal

with a mule. I think what I really love about a slip-on shoe like this is that they just give you that little bit of extra skin, not so much on the top of the foot, but towards the back. that just makes the outfit feel a little less closed off and [music] heavy. And the

sky is the limit in terms of styles. You can go for something more sleek and minimal like this, something fun and embellished like these. Or if you want something really casual, like you just want to run out the door and take your dog for a walk, then I love a Birkenstock Boston [music] clog. Plus,

you know what? They're lazy girl approved. No socks, no laces, and no shoe horns required. You know what? We've covered the essentials, but I really couldn't finish this video without talking about one bonus category. So, let's talk about probably my favorite category, and that is the statement shoe, also known as the weird

shoe or the freaky shoe. Especially if you have your bases covered in your shoe closet, then I think you can let yourself have a little fun. Because let's think about what a shoe does for you in your wardrobe and in your outfit. It can really be the thing that makes it or breaks it. And if you're looking at

your shoes in your wardrobe as a tool, like we have throughout this whole video, then a weird or statement shoe also does that. It offers [music] texture, it offers color, and it offers some interest through different shapes and silhouettes. For the statement shoe, I don't actually have any specific recommendations here because I do think

it is so personal. So instead, I'm going to give you a few things to keep in mind if you are looking to add this type of shoe in your wardrobe with the idea that you're going to get a lot of wear out [music] of it. So here's how to think about it. If you love a ballet flat,

then instead of adding yet another matte black leather pair to your closet, that's where I think you can have some fun with a textured mesh flat or even a patent leather instead. You can still keep it neutral or to whatever colors you actually know that you wear, but that one subtle difference in the finish

will add a bit of contrast and texture to your next outfits. And if that's not your thing, then play with color and shine. Try a fun metallic or a rich suede. Or try to find things that have really special details like this or this. I think the key to adding shoes like this into your wardrobe is to stick

close to your fundamental style and kind of just choosing those classics but with a twist. [music] This way it really avoids buying into a fantasy version of yourself, a shoe that you're never really going to wear, and instead it's just kind of like an upgrade on what you already wear. So, you know, you can get all of these shoes
