Today we're listening to Resurrection. It's about a rich man, a woman he wronged and his road to make it right. It was written by Leo Toltoy in 1899. Toltoy, like War and Peace. Yes, this was his very last novel written in his old age. Back then, Russia was full of unfair courts and huge gaps between rich

and poor. Toltoy attacked all of it. It caused a storm, but the whole world still read it. It all begins with a young man and a servant girl. Let's listen. >> One summer, a rich young nobleman named Necludaf visited his aunt's country house. He was about 24, kind, cheerful, and still pure of heart. In that house

worked a servant girl named Katusha. She was young and gentle with a bright trusting smile. They were worlds apart. He a prince, she a maid. But that summer they walked and talked and laughed together. And slowly two young hearts began to feel something soft and new. It was sweet like a first love in springtime.

But no one knew this pure summer would one day break a whole life. A few years passed and Nekludov came back now an army officer. But he was not that pure young man anymore. One night he charmed Katyusha then left money in her hand. The next morning he rode away as if nothing had happened. He had

seduced her and then abandoned her. Katusha was left alone and soon she was carrying his child. For that the aunt sent her away from the house. With nowhere to go, she fell and kept falling. In the end, she was selling herself on the streets. One man's careless night had ruined a woman's whole life.

Many more years went by and Nicolyud grew older. One day, he was called to the court as a juror. A juror is an ordinary citizen who helps decide if someone is guilty. That day, a woman was on trial for poisoning a merchant and stealing his money. The judges called out her name. Ze
