Week 1 - 1.1.3 Conclusions

In the last two videos, we looked at ways to distinguish arguments from non-arguments. And in so doing, we learned a little bit more about what an argument is and what its components are. That is premises and conclusions. In this video, we're going to do a deep dive into conclusions. You already kind of know what these are, but we're going

to explore these a little more in depth. And then next week, we'll get to premises. Um I I should say though before I proceed that you know we've been last two videos have talked a lot about separating non-arguments and arguments and it's it's not easy right sometimes bad arguments feel like non-arguments sometimes arguments with

unstated conclusions but conclusions that are there nonetheless feel like non-arguments. Uh the goal to be very clear is not to go aha there's no argument here. Uh the goal is to at least be aware when the basic components of an argument are not present when there are not premises and conclusions. Now in some cases this might mean that

there isn't anything to work with but in some cases this might mean that there's something imp implicit that you need to articulate and that is a real task uh of identifying premises and conclusions. So to some extent the the point of of identifying non-arguments in in many of the cases at least is um is knowing when

to supply premises when to identify unstated conclusions. Uh for example like it's a little different with um explanations and again you'll come back to explanations later in public reasoning in later units of this course. Don't worry about that. But at least in terms of the other kinds of non-arguments even something like a
