In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds. May God’s peace, blessings, and mercy be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his pure and righteous companions.

We begin with the sixth section of the course on jurisprudence according to the school of Imam al- Shafi'i, may God be pleased with him. This section is dedicated to the principles of jurisprudence. We will begin, God willing, with the basics of the science of jurisprudence. By “basics,” we mean introductions to the principles of jurisprudence. The science of jurisprudence is

composed of two words; that is, the name of the science is composed of the words “principles” and “jurisprudence.” Scholars usually define such a name in two ways: firstly, as a singular noun, and secondly, as a title for this science. In the first sense, “principles” is the plural of “principle,” and a principle is that upon which something

else is built. Jurisprudence is the knowledge of the legal rulings derived from their detailed evidence. That is, this knowledge is acquired from evidence. Detailed jurisprudence, or rather, considering this name as a title for this noble science, the name "Usul al-Fiqh" (Principles of Jurisprudence) is a title for this science. Usul al-Fiqh is the knowledge of the

general proofs of jurisprudence, how to benefit from them, and the status of the one who benefits from them. Thus, Usul al-Fiqh is the knowledge of three things: knowledge of the general proofs of jurisprudence, knowledge of how to benefit from them, and knowledge of the status of the one who benefits from them, who is the mujtahid (qualified jurist).
