Hello everyone. And welcome back to Bookish English. I'm Ariel. Imagine a city where you can still walk down the street nearly 2,000 years later. You can see the stones where people walked. You can see the shop where a man sold wine. You can see a wall where someone wrote a funny message with a sharp stick.
And you can see the place where family ate their last dinner. This city is real. Its name is Pompeii. It is in the south of Italy near the sea. And every year millions of people visit it. But on one terrible day in the year 79, Pompeii disappeared under a thick layer of ash and stone. And for more than
1,000 years, the world forgot it. Today, I will tell you the story of that day. I will tell it in simple English, slowly and clearly, so you can follow every word. This is a true story, but to make it easier to feel, I will also ask you to imagine a man named Marcus. Marcus is
not a real person from history. He is an example. He is a baker in Pompeii, and he shows us how an ordinary person lived in that city. All the facts around him, the volcano, the ash, the letters, and the people who died are real. Here's how our video works. There are seven chapters. In each chapter, you
will hear one part of the story. After that, I will teach you a few useful words and one small English tip. Then, I will ask you a few easy questions and give you a short speaking job. If you press pause and speak, you will remember much more than if you only listen. So, please speak with me.
Why a story like this? Because stories about real places stay in your memory. When you hear the word volcano next to a real mountain, a real city, and a real family, you will never forget it. And the words you learn today, words like ash, escape, buried, and discover are words that you can use
