Hello and welcome back to Fireside English Stories. I'm so glad you're here with me tonight. Get comfortable, take a breath, and let this story carry you for a little while. Today's story is about a mother, a daughter, and the words that were never spoken out loud. As you listen, try to notice the simple
everyday words. Notice how people talk about love, about fear, and about the things we hide, even from the people we love most. This story is called The Letter My Mother Never Sent. Now, let's begin. My name is Claire Foster. I am 26 years old and I work at a small public library in my hometown.
My job is quiet. I help people find books. I stamp due dates. I sit at a desk near a big window and I watch the rainfall on the street outside. I have always liked quiet things. Maybe that is because my childhood was not always quiet, not on the inside. When I was 5 years old, my mother left.
She did not fight with my father in front of me. She did not shout and she did not slam any doors. One morning, she was there making my breakfast. The next morning, she was gone. My father told me she had to go away for a while. He never explained more than that. For years, I did not ask. I learned
slowly that some questions in our house had no answers, only silence. My mother's name was Ruth. After she left, I did not see her very often. She sent a card on my birthday every single year without fail. Sometimes she visited for an afternoon and we would sit in the park and eat ice
cream. and she would ask me about school. I remember one visit clearly when I was eight. She brought a small yellow cake because yellow was my favorite color. And we sat on a blanket near the pond and fed the ducks together. She laughed that day, a real laugh, and for a few hours it almost felt normal.
