Neuroscientist and host of the Huberman Lab podcast, Andrew Huberman, has spent his entire career studying what happens inside the human brain. But when this Stanford neuroscientist gets asked about God, he starts talking about something he used to hide. And if you've ever prayed and then wondered, "Was that really God or am I just looking for a

connection?" You're going to want to hear where this conversation goes. And so, in these clips I put together for you, listen to what happened when he started asking for direction. Because hearing a scientist say he believes is one thing and then hearing why he kept coming back takes this question into places that reach well beyond the

>> I guess we are going to talk about psychedelics, reality, and religion. Um, couple short statements about this. you're I fascinated by this, so I'd love to hear you talk more about it. But here are a couple ways that I think about it in a non um dismissive way. Most all of biology is just compartmentalized

chemistry. So whether or not it's the flow of electricity along neural circuits to generate tenacity for instance or learning, you're just guiding chemistry in particular ways. Okay, that's not a way to trivialize it. It's kind of a way to think about it. There are two ways that you can change brain function, behavior, and chemistry.

One is mechanical. I can breathe differently. I can get a massage, right? I could poke myself with a knife. Okay? So, there are mechanical forces that change our physiology. And then there are chemical forces, pharmarmacology, things we eat, and chemicals within us, serotonin, etc. That's really it. There's no other thing. In many ways, you're absolutely

right. It's compartmentalized chemistry and mechanics and other chemicals are what control that chemistry. And I think organizing one's thoughts sometimes in that way can be helpful because you realize the stress response is really just a bunch of chemicals happening in certain places and so on. I personally am intrigued about the idea of things outside of our conscious

understanding in biology that maybe things like DMT give us access to or maybe just prayer gives us access to or faith gives us access to >> and it comes from my recognition both as a neuroscientist and just a human who's been alive for 50 years and if we are asking our psychology and biology to

satisfy something that our psychology and biology simply cannot satisfy, >> we're going to miss out on a lot of potential meaning in life. And what I >> think about what he's saying. He's saying that there might be an existence, and we'll get right to it, outside our chemistry, outside of our our biology

that can influence our heart, can influence the meaning and purpose in our life. Again, that's not going to be satisfied by simply chemistry and biology. He's hinting to something that must exist outside of ourselves. to be very direct about it like at the point where I decide to really embrace the idea of faith of a god, right? That

there are powers outside of human understanding that can be very useful. Everything got better. It it relieved me of the pressure to control everything internally and externally. And I find it not just intriguing but absolutely captivating that a force outside of us, some people call it God, the universe, right? Some people might think it's Jesus, some people

might think it's something else. is Jesus >> might actually hold some power in how we could potentially behave, be better, be wouldn't it be wonderful if there's this thing planted in us or some of us which is a question about things outside of us that if we were to embrace could allow us to get to a better place

as a species. Why would we think that a a technology like AI would do that? AI is wonderful, but why would we think that it would come from computers? That's of us, right? Why would we think it would come from anything that humans and only humans could do? To me, the embracing the notion of a god and having

faith, which by the way is about having doubt, but still doing the the things, the practices, prayer, is like to me one of the most liberating and educating. >> Yeah. >> Thing not just about stuff of God in the universe, but about the human brain. >> Okay. I've got some questions. >> Yeah. I mean, it's like we're not meant

to solve this on our own. >> Do you believe in God? >> Absolutely. >> When did God come into your life? >> And again, this keeps going, but I got to stop cuz so I'm going to make sure we recap what he's saying because where he's going to go is awesome because so

far in this conversation, Huberman says he believes in God, but notice how we got there. He said, "Embracing faith relieved the pressure to control everything inside of him and everything around him." I mean, how many of us recognize that exhaustion of life, trying to manage every outcome, fix every person, and think our way out of

every fear? But truly, there's something powerful in admitting, I cannot carry all this myself. No pill, no exercise, nothing is truly going to fill what he's hinting at is this God-sized hole in our heart. But he also mentioned, I want to be careful here. Think about how he mentioned God, the universe, and Jesus

in the same breath. If you know anything, you know those names don't mean all the same thing at all. Uh so in these conversations, it's important to understand what people mean when they say they believe. I mean, it's one thing to believe in God or a god or the universe, but it's another thing to

believe in the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the one that Jesus revealed on earth when he said, "If you've seen me, you've seen the father." So now, what happens when a man who studies a brain for a living starts praying for answers he can't figure out himself? Because what he describes next,

you're going to get the answer to that because it raises questions you may have wrestled with, too. How do you recognize an answer from God when it comes in a way you never thought to look? Let's keep going. Very early, but I was very good at suppressing the notion that it was real. Like I would pray in private.

I would hide it and um and not just in bad times. And then I think I lived enough and observed enough hardship. We've talked about some of this on a previous podcast. I talk a little bit about that in the book, but but I observed it out there too, not just in my own life that I I started realize,

especially if you stick your hands in enough brains. And you see my good friend Eddie Chang record from the brain of a awake human and remove a tumor and save that person's life. And you also realize that brain areas are controlling things because when they're stimulated, that person feels and responds in a

certain way. You realize that we're not all meat and potatoes in there. There's something else. >> Amen. >> But I'm not sure that it all comes from us. It's it's sort of hard to explain. the the best way I kind of wriggle out of this. >> By the way, this sounds to me like

someone trying to use logic and understanding and worldly vernacular to explain that which is far beyond us, far beyond what we can comprehend, but I still think it's awesome, is that I I brought my dad on my podcast. My dad and I, we have a great relationship now. He's 83 years old. He's super vigorous.

He loves ideas. He's into quantum. And he says, "Anyone who talks about the quantum field, who can't show you the math, can't show you the proofs, is lying." He loves it when people are like, "Oh, the quantum this and the quantum that is often is in like the meditative communities, but others too."

And he goes, "People throw this word around because very few people actually understand quantum biology." that what he was saying and we were having a discussion about God and he said, "Yeah, at some point if you're going to have faith in a higher power, God, you have to depart this notion that your logical

brain can go from A to B to C and boom, you're there." >> Are you saying, "But you don't know all of this. >> There's no math to prove this thing that >> y >> I call my the existence of God." There's no math and it's not worth torturing yourself over. What I believe is worth

torturing yourself over and there's also great beauty in there is embracing the practice of prayer, embracing the questions and the like opening the aperture of your beliefs just for a moment going maybe I'm going to just believe in God for 10 seconds. >> See what that's like. And I started to experience beauty and experience um

peace around not trying to control things that obviously were not under my control, not just within me but in other people. And I really started to see what I could only describe as miracles. And by miracles, I mean I would pray for some indication of what the right path might be on something where it wasn't

clear to me. And then 2 or 3 days later something would happen which would like seem almost completely unrelated and the answer would come in that thing and then I just locked in. I don't. >> Now notice what convinced him to keep going. I love this. I mean, he describes praying for direction and then finding

clarity through something unexpected. Maybe you've had a moment like that. You prayed something that would happen. And you wonder, God, was that you? When it happens, what stands out is that he began asking God first for direction that he couldn't find on his own. The Bible repeatedly tells us to ask and it

will be given. Seek and you'll find. Knock and the door will be open. In Jeremiah 33:3, God tells Jeremiah, "Call to me and I will answer you and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." Jeremiah was conf was confined when God said that his circumstances were beyond his control.

But he still called on the one who understood him. He still called on God. Maybe you know what that feels like. You've thought it through a hundred times and you still don't know what to do. You can bring your uncertainty to God. Ask him. Ask him for wisdom. Open his word. be willing to follow even when

his direction offers you something else that is not in accordance necessarily with your plans because again his ways are higher than your ways. But we have to learn to ask and we have to be willing to be patient and listen because an experience can get our attention but we still need to draw near to God and

know the word in scripture to help us understand what it is that he wants us to do in our life. He loves you and he's guiding you in your life right now if you'll just be open to him. Now, I will bring this up. I don't know why he's just I I would love to press him. I I

would love to ask him questions. You know, maybe he go maybe this isn't the right podcast, but what does he really believe? It seems like he's uncomfortable to talk about what God which God he believes in. Maybe he's unsure. Maybe he's afraid it'll offend people. I am curious about which God he's talking about. But I'm using this

as an example. You have a neuroscientist on his own journey that's realizing there is something outside of biology and chemistry outside the brain we can't understand and we need that connection. We need that direction in our life to help us control fear you know pills all these ways that we use in the world to

fix ourselves and to help our circumstances. He's realizing this 50 years as as a man and as a scientist it doesn't work. We need prayer. We need to draw close to God. Now, next, he's about to raise a different question. We're going to finish this last clip for you. All right. If the brain participates in

spiritual experience, does that explain God away? Listen to where he takes that with the idea of thirst. This is good. Think there will ever be the God goggles, the emotional goggles, so to speak, come from this thing that we call faith. Faith is the infrared goggles of of human understanding about why we're here. And the the challenge

for people is I feel like people come in three categories. They they either at least three they either were forced religion in a bad way. So they hate it. They never had access to it in a way that made them gently pulled toward it or you know they were like it was like

people knocking on their door. It felt like a disturbance. And I, you know, I'm not against prostitizing if it's done kindly and with, you know, delicately, >> right? >> Or they are absolutely convinced that it can't be, which I look at as sort of a spiritual anorexia. You know, there are regions of the brain that when

stimulated, people get a godlike experience of God, not as themselves, but they feel it. You had this idea. >> And so people have said, "Oh, well then there's a God region of the brain, and it's just a brain region. It's just a brain region that can't be." >> But we have brain regions.

Arthur says this much more eloquently than I could. There are brain regions for thirst which in the philosophical way again this is coming from him not me would say well that proves the existence of water. The thirst proves the existence of water right. So I have a thirst circuit for gaining understanding of this thing that we call life and

whatever comes after it. I love it. That thirst comparison is powerful because scripture uses that very same picture to describe our longing for God. Psalm 42 says, "As the heart pants after water, so pants my soul after you, oh God, my soul thirsts for you, for the living God." Think about that picture. Uh other

translations might say it's a deer. Okay? As a deer pants for water. Some say as a heart pants for water. A thirsty deer needs water to live. And the psalmist recognizes a need just as deep within his own soul. Jesus said uh he said, "Come to me all who are weary." And all who thirst, come to me and

drink. He talked to the woman at the well. He said, "You're going to keep coming to this well, this physical well for water that's you're going to need to keep coming back to." And and he's using this as an example that man, like we chase these things in the world. We chase these physical things. We want to

satisfy our chemistry. We want to satisfy our bi biology. We know there's a God-sized hole in our heart. We know we're thirsting for something more, but we keep coming to the world expecting it to fix us, but it never does. Jesus is telling us, and he's telling you maybe even right now, and this is

something I always have to remember, my heart is made for him. He is the living water. And he says that he will give you living water that will that will well up within you into eternal life. I encourage you read John 4 for yourself. Read it today. Stop this video. Go open up John 4 and read this amazing

conversation with this woman who's a Samaritan. I mean, he wasn't even supposed to be talking to her. He's a Jew and she's a Samaritan woman. By the way, if you understood that relationship, you'd realize Jews do not talk to not only Samaritans, but definitely not Samaritan women. It's her culture. It's different than us

today. It's the way it was. But he went to her. He made time for her. He loved her. He showed her the truth. If you keep coming to this well, if you keep coming to these men in your life, because that's what her main sin was. You keep filling yourself with these relationships. Forget about it. You're

never going to be filled. You're going to continue to come back. But if you come to me, I will give you living water. Later on in scripture, it tells us he's talking about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit who is here now. The Holy Spirit who is drawn near to us. The Holy

Spirit who is God on earth that was promised to us. Jesus now that he have finished his work on the cross made a way for us to experience him personally and spiritually. And so what David Huberman over here is is looking for and Scott Bartlett. Okay, I don't know where human's faith is exactly, but I can tell

you this. It's for the Holy Spirit. It's for a daily communion with his love, with his presence, with his glory. And man, I'm telling you, I mess up. I mean, I mess this up, okay? I'm not perfect. I'll be real with you. Like, there's days where I'll try to do it on my own

and before I realize it, it's too late. I'm thirsty. I'm parched. And I have to go to God and have to repent for trying to live this life on my own. It's a daily walk and I'm inviting you into it. If you've never made a decision to follow Christ and you're wondering, why

do I feel like nothing in this world satisfies me, read John 4. And then once you're done with that, read John 3. I'm telling you, Jesus is real. He loves you. He died on the cross for you so you could be forgiven of all your sins and have eternal life. So give your heart to

him today. Turn from your sin and make a decision wherever you're at in your in your walk. Follow Christ. But read his words. Read John 15 after John 3. Watch what happens, man. It's going to you're going to know that this is true and it's so powerful. Well, thanks for being here, my friends.
