Watching news at Prime. Let's get into this conversation now. Africa My Vote Movement has announced Temba Nzimande as its Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate for November's local government elections. There's been mixed reaction to his candidacy. He is a former convict, but his party is backing him nonetheless. Nzimande joining me in studio tonight to talk us through his plans for the

troubled metro. Mr. Nzimande, good to have you here. When I say it's a troubled metro, that could be an understatement. I want to spell out for you exactly what I mean when I say Ekurhuleni is a troubled municipality. It has serious financial pressures. It has a deteriorating service delivery track record. You also have in that

years of political instability. And so, with all those combined, what experience do you bring to the table to manage not only a large organization such as the city of Ekurhuleni, but also a very complex organization. What qualifies you to lead it? >> Good morning. Good evening. And good evening to your viewers. And to my

people Ekurhuleni, good evening to the beautiful city. Look, I do not come as Ut̪ Temba Lukhele, but I come as the entity Africa My Vote. So, I've joined Africa My Vote a year ago. So, I've been in class ever since. And I did not lose sight on President Floyd Shivambu and the Politburo. And I'm sure a lot of

people they, you know, regard him highly as a scholar. In Africa My Vote at some point, I ended up saying I need to boycott this thing. Are we in politics? Are we at school? Are we at the concentration camp? Or are we doing politics? What is this political thing? Even in prison, I did

not live like this. But, I can tell you the experience I gained over time, I did not regret a day I spent with President Floyd. Even when I drive with him, it's exactly the same thing. So, what I realized when he was actually unpacking all the issues from even his service delivery. And then he made an example

the other day. He was saying to me, You know with the issue of the corruption, it starts with just a small little thing. If you can check with the people that are working in Ekurhuleni, you know that people that are working for the city, they are actually liquid or solid of money to more than the

people that are outside the city. Because, let's say you're a service provider. After providing a service, when you are supposed to be paid, now you need to pay your portion. When you are paying a portion, if you're not paying a portion, let's say you're talking about it's 10% for you to be serviced. So, let's say your invoice is

about 10 million and they're saying 10% of that. It might be money that are supposed to be directed to your taxes, you know, to your to your to your overheads. You're supposed to pay your your service to your people. And now you need to pay the people internally for doing their job. And then at the end of

the day, there are people also are saying, "Hey, when are you working here and you are coming from another city or another land? So, you are supposed to pay us another 30% for working in the city." So, meaning you are owing double people before you could even operate. So, people they ended up saying, "No, I mean, it's of no

use for us even to bid in the city." So, the corruption that city is like a bucket of water with holes. It is leaking. So, the experience over time, because it's been 20 years working as Utima as an entity, doing community work. And then over time I realized that we've lost robots. Now,

robots in in the whole entire Ekurhuleni are controlled by Okay, most parts of Ekurhuleni are controlled by hobos. It's the only city. And I'm saying this the only city that we we've never experienced a PSL game. We don't have an international convention center, but we are saying it's a city. People are taking Ekurhuleni as Johannesburg, but

it's Ekurhuleni. At some point, the traffic cops, you are stopped, but they don't have uh books to write uh a ticket. At some point, they are hiding, but they are driving private cars. And I'm saying, what is this uh we are in? And then I said, "No, man. If I am not going to hop in, but as a leader." And I

said, "No, no, no. Let me just put my best foot what uh best foot forward and bring my experience." Then, I started going to school. It took some elaborate scheme. You need to uh uh try and make sure that at least you bring some little knowledge or experience or your wisdom. So, from

street street school school strata, and then here we are, politics. >> All right. I I realize that I have to repeat the question, but let me >> [laughter] >> let me repeat it differently. >> say. >> Ekurhuleni Yeah. is a a municipality, but not just any. It's a metro. >> Yeah. >> And what that means is that there are

billions of public money that needs to be managed from that entity. Why should the people of Ekurhuleni trust you with not only its finances, but governing it? >> Totally. Uh before I said anything, I said to you, "Remember, I'm not a politician. I have never been a politician, and I'm not in the system.

Let us just face the reality." Now, as we are fighting to go in, I am not going as Utěmba, but I'm going with the people that I equipped to make sure that we are going to be leading the city as the army together. When we are pushing people out of the system, we are entering with the

people that understands the system. But, remember that there will be issues like our service delivery issues. If you're asking me a question to say, "Skeem, what are those issues?" Say you have got three issues that you're saying are key to you. And then I'll say to you, "Let us focus on the revenue enhancement. And

what do you think it is the biggest problem?" And I will tell you straight to say, "The revenue collection with the city, they have a way of collecting revenue, but there is a leak somewhere." Because they would go to big companies that are consuming biggest electricity. But, at some point, they find a way of making sure that if we

collected 200 million, they would make a deal with the very same company and say, "No, no, no, when are you going to pay at least 100 million to a 20 million you're paying it to this account, and then you make sure that we only we forfeit that 100 million." So, that is how the the the money is leaking into

the system. So, it simply means it it now taking us to the issue of a crime as well. >> So, you you haven't been able to to answer >> You're grilling >> my questions. >> You're grilling me, Gugu. >> You you've not answered >> taking you head-on." >> You've not answered any of my questions.

[laughter] So, perhaps let's take it slightly easier on you. >> Yeah. >> I I want to think that your past >> Mhm. >> is what has sold you. >> Yeah. >> And this is why you have a huge following on social media. You run your own podcast. >> Mhm. >> But, do you think really that is enough

for you to be in charge of a city, a municipality? Or is this for you a joke really that you can come on a station like this? And try and convince the viewer that you can run a city or is this part of the extension of your persona that you now want to

make the public believe that you can run a municipal entity. I I'm trying to understand from you. Do you take this seriously? Or is your party putting you forward because it simply doesn't take the people of Ekurhuleni seriously? >> They're taking the people of Ekurhuleni very seriously. This is a calling, Gcali. When I'm saying to you I am

willing to work, I am willing to learn. Remember, I'm not a professional in terms of Utemba has honors degree. Utemba is an accountant. Most of these politicians, you can challenge me personally. That is why I'm saying it should not be a question of personal attack on Utemba. People came into the space knowing

nothing. When they got I mean, when ANC took power, you know it is 32 years later, there are still mistakes everywhere. But I know with my leadership qualities and leadership skills, I started I'll make a very stupid or a silly example with the very same podcast. I knew nothing about TV, Mr. Gcali. When I

got into a space, my podcast is sitting on number two today. The city of Ekurhuleni is not a podcast. I know I'm going to be attacked for this. And then I got into Moja Love. When I ran the one of the biggest shows in Every Sunday, that show is number one trending on

Twitter. So in everything that I put my hands on or my head on, President Floyd Shivambu and politburo members, they were not playing when they said "Tembha, we are trusting you on this and we are going to train you." So I don't want to come with a PR campaign. When I come, I

play motivation as a mumbo jumbo and I'm trying to be diplomatic with words. I am saying to you I am here and I am willing to put my best foot forward and I'm do I'm going to do everything what it takes. Let's say you're asking me about schools, Colly. There is no school I've never been into

Ekurhuleni. If you ask any child who is into Ekurhuleni or any other parent, there's no one who doesn't know this place because I've made sure that we are fighting drugs, gangsterism, bullying, any teenage pregnancy, and they understand what it means. When you're talking about when you're talking about gender-based violence, I'm a GBV champion. So, all of

those issues that are affecting people in Ekurhuleni by issues I've been in the forefront. When you're talking about now the issue of the illegal immigrants, I've been in the forefront ever since. So, I understand the issues that our community are are struggling or suffering from. So, it doesn't mean that now when you don't

understand the issues of a governance per se at this present moment, I have my own people that I'm working with. I have an army of people including the president Floyd Shivambu who is saying scheme. Let's push numbers and push in forcefully. So, once we enter into the chamber, it doesn't matter. Once we are

in, then we could decide what is going to happen when we get into the city. But I am telling you >> So, no, no, no, no. No, no. Wait. You're saying a lot of things at once. >> Yeah. >> Let's assume for a second. Let's entertain [clears throat] you for a moment. >> Okay.

>> And assume >> Yes. >> that Africa My Boere >> Mhm. >> is going to win the city of Ekurhuleni. >> Yes. Which is going to win? >> Once that is done, >> Yeah. >> when you say we will then decide what happens, are you saying that you could possibly shift aside for a much more

capable candidate? >> I will not I will not usher the people into this governance, Colly. Whilst I'm going to take a rain check, I am saying to you I am leading people every day. I've got foot soldiers. I've got people who are ground forces of My Boere. Every day I'm the national head of

mobilization in Africa My Boere. I did not just join politics a year ago. I'm studying every day. I am empowering myself. >> yes, Khawula. You have admitted that you don't understand governance. You have no such experience. Now, let's be clear on that, yes? >> I'm I said I'm not a politician, Khawula. >> You said you're not a politician.

>> words into my mouth, yeah. It's a personality thing. >> not But, you also do not understand governance, at least right now. >> No, but that's what I'm saying to you in the city. >> And that's why you talk about an army of people that are going to come with you. >> That is why some people have advised me.

>> My question to you >> Yeah. Give me a chance. >> Yes. >> That's why I simplified my question to you to say therefore once the city of Ekurhuleni is won by African Mayibuye >> Yeah. >> are you saying that you the mayoral candidate would be willing to step aside for a much

more capable candidate? >> Uh Khawula, I have said to you even the mayor when they uh take or assume their responsibility or position, you go with the army of people. People have advised us. I am saying to you as a leader, you get there as a caretaker. Making decisions, you have people that are

advising you around the clock. So, even the president who's running the country, are you saying or or President Jacob Zuma, he got in there because he had honors, masters, and everything. Khawula, when are you playing tricks with me? I am saying to you I'm not a typical township boy in J. Khawula, I've

been in the game. I've been in the streets. I know exactly what we're doing. With African Mayibuye, I am not just going to talk in J and claim easy victories. We've been working. We've been on the ground. So, I am saying to it that that even the citizens of Ekurhuleni, the people who have lived

with this scheme, they understand where I'm coming from. I know what it is. With parties, we are playing party politics and play on the gallery because we want numbers. But, when I'm on the ground, when I'm on the mic, when I'm when when I'm at work, whatever that where I lay my my my eyes or my hands on, I make
