I am extremely honored and grateful that I have been invited to share all of this with you this afternoon, as you have asked me to talk a little bit about what

social entrepreneurship is. It is extremely important, and I am giving you this preamble before we get into the subject matter or the academy. What is social entrepreneurship? We often find ourselves wondering , how do I start a social business? Well, many times we don't know what social entrepreneurship is. We think that social entrepreneurship is only,

hey, you guys, let's put together backpacks, fill them with school supplies, or let's paint a classroom or help improve a school. Social entrepreneurship as such goes far beyond this topic of new economies today, what we now know as B corporations, as triple impact, where it's about not all of us getting rich, but rather

with what we earn we try to help the environment, we try to improve the quality of life of people. That's what it means to be a social entrepreneur through social entrepreneurship. This afternoon I have two incredible, impressive examples to show you: one social enterprise in Africa and another here in Latin America. These examples

demonstrate that it is indeed possible to achieve social entrepreneurship and for people to grow economically, improve their lives financially, while also helping others. If you'd like to learn more about social entrepreneurship, or if you're curious to do so, I invite you to join me. There is a project at Unitec, for example, about social entrepreneurship. It just

so happens that it's a program, a contest called "Yo Emprendo" (I am an entrepreneur), where people can participate for seed capital to continue growing. We are a country that desperately needs social entrepreneurs, and I believe that knowing about social entrepreneurship, especially at your age, is something I would have loved to have. It would have

taught me a lot because I love being able to help people whenever I can. I studied architecture, and I'll tell you a little bit about myself. I studied the subject a lot, I was very close to an ethnic group, the Garifuna ethnic group, and then I was very close to communities and managed to understand how to develop

social enterprises, how to make these communities grow, how to develop, that's something incredible. And then also, how do I grow, right? How can I grow economically? So, today we're going to learn a little bit about this. Uh, I know social entrepreneurs, I teach the innovation and social entrepreneurship class for the industrial administration and

entrepreneurship degree. So, that's something we're going to learn about during these 45 minutes, an hour that we're going to be together. Well, today's topic, as I was saying, is social entrepreneurship. This is me. Uh, my name is Manuela Flores. Well, I'm an architect. Uh, I studied at the Center for Design, Architecture and Construction. I have a Master's degree

in local development and tourism. The part of the architecture that I liked was the social aspect. I don't like to build, I like to see the territory, I like to help people. When I worked, I worked a lot with the Garifuna community over there in Tela and I learned about many social problems

they had, a problem with HIV, there were many social problems, there were many people who migrated, the fishermen spent a lot of time away from the communities, there were many communities with mothers in charge and grandmothers, because the women migrated, if the husbands did not return, so the grandmothers were the ones who took care of

the grandchildren. So they were matriarchal, right? Those communities that were owned by the mothers or grandmothers were the ones who managed these communities, and seeing them preparing the yucca, the coconut bread, and all of this taught me to love my country a little more, much more, and to want to see how I could

help through this, right? At that time I didn't know, I was still very green in this, I didn't know what social entrepreneurship was, I didn't know what product development was, I didn't know what all this business generation was, social innovation as such, but I gradually built a little bit of everything and well, I have a specialty in

family educational counseling, so I love working with young people. I also have a higher certification with the Laure network of International University, and I have been an entrepreneurship teacher from 2015 to the present. I am a fellow entrepreneur member of Kennis of State, an entrepreneur, teacher and mentor of incubation and acceleration ventures, an independent consultant

advising on issues of tourism product development, tourism marketing, development and design of tourism projects, application of digital skills innovation, design thinking, business model, customer development, storytelling. Last year I spent a few months with Impact Junky as a mentor for blonde tourism ventures and I am currently starting to mentor for Bridge Forbillions, which are

social ventures. They work a lot with social projects, with banks in different countries. Right now I'm working on a project in Guatemala, I'm giving them mentorship. I just happened to be looking at the Bridge Pavilion platform and I'm scheduled to be the mentor. So, and I don't get paid for that, so that's social entrepreneurship

because I'm helping others. It's part of what one has in their DNA, right? This thing about social entrepreneurship. So, this is a little bit of who I am. There's a little more, but I'll tell you a little bit about that. Okay, so, speaking of everything, because therefore I'm going to talk a little bit about

what social entrepreneurs are. They are individuals with innovative solutions to social challenges. How many social challenges do we not have? And here let's put aside everything. And here we have to speak very clearly if we are red, green, blue, purple. In other words , we have to talk about politics as such because the challenge

is social, cultural, and environmental. We are seeing everything we experience daily with the issue of the social problems we are living through. How much is the price of a quintal of beans rising? We lack policies; there is no clear development in agriculture. How can we help farmers in the interior of the country with

apps, with technology? How can we avoid having an intermediary? So, there are a lot of problems that we can help with. How can we help these people with the circular economy? They're going to tell me it's a circular economy. That's a different workshop because I won't be able to talk to you about the

circular economy. But how can we talk about so many things in order to help communities grow, to help communities improve their quality of life? How can we tell these communities not to come to the city, to stay there, but we have to educate them? So, the issue of solving the problem with innovation is what we as

social entrepreneurs have to do, which involves getting stakeholders involved. Obviously, there are actors from all over here, I mean, there are actors from universities, city halls, churches, and even politicians, right? And it has a lot to do with how we see our country, how we see ourselves, because the social entrepreneur has a task, has an

objective and that is what transforms us, makes us different in relation to what we want to do. That is a leadership that we carry in our DNA that we possess. They are ambitious and persistent in addressing major problems and offering new ideas for system-level change. There are things we need to put in place and say, "Okay,

what problems do we have? What's the priority?" Traffic is not a priority. Obviously we all suffer from traffic, but we do have more serious problems than traffic. Which are the most serious problems? Environmental pollution, deforestation, migration, illiteracy. Those are problems. How can I eradicate them? We have to work as social entrepreneurs, but we can't

work at a macro level. The social entrepreneur has to take an innovative idea and go and implement it in a place. How do I do it in my community? How do I do it in my community? What can we do? How is a plan to make a small plan, validate it in one place, start it, test it

, validate it, and then this problem can be scaled to other places and repeated, right? And obviously, considering the sustainability factor, how can this be sustainable over time? Sustainable means that it can continue financially, right? Social entrepreneurship consists of satisfying a social or environmental need through a business that generates economic benefits and reinvests them

in achieving the main social objective . So, I'm going to pause because obviously you're going to say, "Listen, what example can I give?" There are examples. Um, I don't know if there are any examples, because there's a term known in the United States called greenwashing. There are so many companies that, for example, say, "We have

a social responsibility, and we plant trees, we do this," but in their production, in the production they have, they aren't doing anything to protect the environment. So, it's useless for them to say they're helping the environment by planting a thousand trees when what they're dumping into the water is pure pollution. So it's important to know, yes, what we

're actually doing. And I repeat, it's a company that generates economic profits and reinvests them in achieving its main social objective . What is it that you want to achieve? In our country, we've forgotten about people with disabilities. There are many, very few companies that don't know or don't even have the infrastructure to work with

people with disabilities. We don't have menus for people with disabilities in restaurants. We forget about menus for people with disabilities, and I could give you a lot more examples . We're not very inclusive in this system we were raised in, or in the one we 're in. So it's very important that we see

that within social entrepreneurship There are so many things that can come up. That's why the Sustainable Development Goals are obviously not unknown to many . And the Sustainable Development Goals are 17 goals. Whether you know them or not, I hope you do . They are 17 goals that stem from the Millennium Development Goals, and those

goals say, let's try to end hunger, eradicate poverty, take care of... let's see how we work with climate change, how we make sustainable cities, innovation in infrastructure and industry, and so on . But obviously, all of this stems from all the problems we've had for many years. So, it's very interesting what we see surrounding

social entrepreneurship. Okay, I'll continue. I hope there are no questions. If you have any, well, there's always Google to answer them. No, just kidding. Everything is very clear here. Okay. Social entrepreneurship, look closely, Um, it comes from Social Enterprise or Social Entrepreneurship, that's the English, or uh, I mean, this encompasses the entrepreneurial

and innovative activities of non- profit organizations, people involved in civic activities, and companies or businesses whose programs result in both social and financial benefits. The model includes both social benefit and the principles of sustainable business. So, there are companies, organizations, for example, uh, we can't include foundations here because they don't fit. Remember that

foundations and all these organizations, non- governmental organizations, they work along different lines. So, if you want to create a foundation or a non-governmental organization, that's fine. But if you want to be a social entrepreneur, you're going to work on a non-profit basis. You're going to profit because you're going to have, let's say, a salary, you're going to have a

plan, you're going to generate income, but obviously you're going to have a social purpose. What is that social purpose going to be ? You have to identify it, right? I mean, you're going to work, let's say, you can say, I'm going to work with vulnerable communities, let's say, there's one right now, the name escapes me, but there's

an example in Chile, for instance, where they're working with clothing. They collect jumpers used by industries and recycle them, turning them into other clothes or making shoes. And what they're doing is that they came and worked with, and are currently working with, the prisoners at the penitentiary in Chile, the least aggressive ones,

those about to be released, those with light sentences. And what are they doing? Giving work to vulnerable people, or those at social risk, or who were at social risk. And these people, upon release from prison, can already have jobs because they're being trained to work with this company. Also, in South America, For example, there's

another business that also works with people who have some degree of disability and other age groups that larger companies don't hire, right? People who have had an injury, who are over 45, who are no longer typically hired by companies, so this company hires them. So, what's the social purpose? What's your social purpose? To

educate, to work with vulnerable groups, young people, women's communities , migrants, right? So it's really interesting when I define myself as a social entrepreneur, what kind of person am I, what kind of entrepreneur am I? And that's something really important, really beautiful. Here in our country, we have so many communities, we have nine

ethnic groups, many of which live in extreme poverty, several or most of them. What can we do with them? What projects can be done? We can, for example, focus solely on the products they make. Can these people be trained to certify these products so they can sell them in countries like Europe? The looms they make...

Lenca people, for example. So, everything we're seeing is really interesting . We have to look at it, and that's the beautiful part, because when we look at this, there are ways to earn money, ways to start businesses, interesting projects that can be developed, but we have to have that component, that heart, because in the end, a

social entrepreneur has to have a heart that wants to help, that wants to... I've always said, it's not just about going to plant a tree. Right now, I'm mentoring an NGO that works to reduce the carbon footprint here in the country. It's called Sustentas; you can look them up if you want to volunteer

. You can also join Sustentas. They're a social enterprise. It's great; it's just for young people, they have about 700 volunteers, and you can be part of the Sustentas movement. And I always told them, why don't you do something like what the children with cancer do? Why don't you have us sponsor a tree or... Several

trees, for example. And imagine , I would be happy sponsoring a mahogany tree, and paying a monthly or annual fee to ensure that the tree will grow, and that they would send me a plaque, or rather, take me there one day to see where my tree was planted, and that it would have a plaque with my

name on it, showing that I was the one who sponsored it, right? So, there are many things we can do as social entrepreneurs. So, I think it's something we have to set out to do , to break away from the traditional. That's why I was saying, it's a new economy, it's a new way of thinking. I was

reading recently, I think last year, in this entrepreneurship course, I recently took a course for teacher development at Unitec, and it was precisely about this. This is the new economy. And the new economy stems from the fact that companies now have to be triple impact. Triple impact means precisely that, that they are companies that

have to have that heart to say, well, I'm going to help society, the environment, and have that sustainability so that, although it's good to have an income, at the same time I have to help because... but they're going to say to me, "But why?" Look, so many years have passed and you have to realize that the

environment is where we get our resources and society is the one that helps us pay for the things we buy, so we should give back to both the resources and the environment, right? In this chart you can see that there is, let's say, the company, a business, then there is the for-profit company, which is a non-

profit organization, a cooperative, a charitable company, like in the United States, right? A community-focused company in the UK, that's one example, and the Sharble Organization tells you, then there's a company whose purpose is to offer products and services, that has employment, that has environmental protection, community support and that has social inclusion. So, these are the ends,

right? It is about changing the world, obtaining and offering services and products to disadvantaged consumers, supporting social and environmental programs, improving intersectoral relations, seeking funding, education and support for target groups and for the common good, poverty alleviation, health and well-being, gender equality and social justice. Obviously, going from a business to having a common good, look at

everything we have to go through, right? And it's not easy because we haven't... uh, I remember that, and I repeat, we're not used to what you hear. We are a socially responsible company , excuse me for the stumble there. So this is it, but that's really how it is. That's what we've been taught, and

social responsibility is what we focus on; you see, it's something that should have been in place already. Socially responsible action should help achieve the sustainable development goals, and we haven't done so. That's why a lot of people and a lot of countries no longer believe in the Sustainable Development Goals, because we're in 2023 and

the 2030 Agenda, when supposedly the Sustainable Development Goals would have been met, will end in 7 years. So that's good, that's very important that I know about it. What is a social enterprise? Therefore, social entrepreneurship is a corporate perspective from which companies direct efforts and resources to the development of innovative solutions to

social problems, promoting a positive impact on the community. I arrive in a community, for example, if I want to go and start a business in a community, and the first thing I'm going to look at is how I can help the community, how I can involve the women of that community to help me. Um, or for example,

if they are vulnerable groups, right? What social problems does the community have? If it's about learning, how can I improve my learning? If it's, for example, a lack of technology, how can I incorporate technology for them? Um, I was talking to experts from Tigo the other day and I was saying to them, yes,

from Tigo, and I was saying, you guys who are putting up antennas everywhere, why don't you help people to start businesses and teach them how? Go to those remote villages and train people because you don't bring people there, you don't create a hub in the area and teach them how to start businesses. Be that

transformation, not only of social responsibility, it's not about giving gifts, because it's not about giving gifts. Get it out of your mind that social entrepreneurship is about giving away money, giving away bags or big bags or giving away things. It's about showing people how they can become sustainable through their own abilities. That's the beautiful thing about it,

and that's the joy of later saying the satisfaction I have in saying that I taught those people to do that and that thanks to me they are growing, right? That's the beautiful thing about it. Definition of social entrepreneurship. The essence of social entrepreneurship is the launch of a business whose ultimate goal is not the maximization of

economic profit, but the creation of value for society. That's important. Look closely and I'll come back, I'm going to repeat it again. Social entrepreneurship is the launch of a business whose ultimate goal is not economic profit, but the creation of value for society. I have to create value for society. What value does the company create for

society? Start asking yourselves right now what value these companies create for society. What value do they really create for it? Are we creating value? So, that's a very important thing that I have to analyze when I'm a social entrepreneur. What are the characteristics of a social enterprise? For a business to be classified as a

social enterprise, it must be based on social responsibility and must have at least the following elements: objectives, benefits, actions, company, opportunities, establishment, it must be inspiring, innovative, have solutions and be sustainable. Now we're going to look at each one individually so you can understand it a little better. Therefore, following the line of the

characteristics of social entrepreneurship, the main objective should be social welfare and the creation of promoting work for and with society. I'm not going to arrive somewhere and bring jobs from other places . I have to help them improve their abilities, their quality of life. In other words, I have to help. Yes, the profits, most of

your profits and income, should be reinvested in achieving the social objective. In other words, it's not that you're going to spend all the money you earn. But remember that you have a social objective. You already have to have, let's say, if I earn 5 million lempiras and my social objective is such and such, I already know that of

those 5 million lempiras, two will go to fulfill my social objective. And the other three remain for the company as such. Yes, your actions, your social actions, take precedence over profit; profit is not what you want. That's why even today many people have that problem with the issue of foundations, with the issue of NGOs; I mean, creating

a foundation in Honduras is not easy. I already got it when you created the foundation. Um, I've been very involved, I've worked with many foundations and I'm part of the board of directors of one foundation, it's called Fundación Honduras Social, you can also look it up, uh, it's from San Pedro Sula, Karen Madrid is the

founder, right now she's doing some great projects with people, she has a project called Latinos Click, with people from Spain, Hondurans and Latin Americans in Spain, you can look it up. Well, one of them is trying to help entrepreneurs who are there in Spain so they can market or sell their product, and also so that

people who have their products here in Honduras can send them to Spain and thus help and benefit the entrepreneurs who are in our country through their platform, right? So, look for her if you want to meet her and participate too. Or if you have a product and you're an entrepreneur and want to sell your

product through Latinos Click, look for it too, and I bet you can do very well. So, the company aims to establish itself as a business through the use of its own methods and in the commercial or business field such as marketing, advertising and of course, sales. In other words, the company will function the

same, but it has to have its social purpose. Job opportunities and professional growth opportunities. I'm changing things up here. The establishment is set up as a store, whether physical or virtual, and offers products or services in the same way as traditional commercial businesses. That's why I mentioned the case of the foundation earlier. Karen's foundation or the

Honduras Social foundation can be found on social media. The Honduras Social Aid Foundation is a project for the inclusion of disabled people and migrant women. It's a spectacular project that Karen did. She has a son with autism and Karen saw that here in Honduras we didn't have the means to help autistic children. His son

tried to graduate. At a graduation, the boy didn't understand how to line up, and well, a minister, a former minister— she went to complain to the former minister because they didn't want the boy to participate in the graduation—and the former minister made sure the boy participated. That's when she said, "This is my

mission. I'm going to become a social entrepreneur and create a foundation to support women like me and people like my son who don't have the support to function in this country." And that's what it's been like, right? It's been incredible, inspiring, which is the next point. She's been inspiring and has done so much. She won one of the

UNIC "Yo Emprendo" awards. I think she won—I don't remember which edition—I think it was the fourth or fifth edition, and it's been incredible. I also invite you to check out the " Yo Emprendo" awards on social media. You'll love who the winners have been, the topics, and it's very inspiring. You're going to

love it , you can also find out who the winners are on YouTube. It's really full of stories about the social entrepreneurs. So, the social entrepreneur or social enterprise must inspire internally among the entrepreneurs, as well as the potential beneficiaries of the product or service resulting from the initiative , right? Then the solutions provide

innovative solutions to social problems. When I talk to you about innovation, innovation comes from changing processes. If simply planting a tree doesn't work, if just going to plant a tree doesn't work because the tree dies because there's no follow-up, I can't do the same thing again. I have to change the procedure. What am I going to do?

Right? So, if the social problem—if you look, we're having social problems right now—if this methodology or this ideology we 're using isn't working, we have to have what's called systemic change. And the change Systemic changes, young people, these are changes that come from the root, meaning we change the way we think. But this has to be

done with everyone, we all have to agree and say, "We can't continue like this , neither socially nor environmentally." And that's where innovations come from, that's where social innovation comes from. The beautiful thing about this is that public policies are coming that make us change and shake our foundations so we can fight against poverty,

against social exclusion, against crime, against climate change. But as long as we don't see that need, we're going to continue with the same problems. And that's something that's coming, social innovation. That's why social entrepreneurs can't act on a grand scale; they have to start with small projects that are then replicated in different areas to see

if they are sustainable, scalable, and replicable, right? And that's what's important about this, because we have to see if it worked in this municipality , if it worked in this region, and then we see how it's replicated, if this platform It worked here, let's see if this platform works there. And listen, that's why I'm telling you, you don't

necessarily have to create a foundation, because trying to get funding these days is really complicated. I mean, trying to get grants, funding, and all that is more difficult, but that's another topic altogether. Sustainability— the project has to be one that can, over time, generate a benefit with financial profitability. We all want to be

financially profitable; it doesn't necessarily have to be, as I said, like a Bill Gates millionaire, right? Sometimes everyone says, "No, I do want to be Bill Gates or an Elon Musk," but we don't necessarily have to be someone who lives well and has all our needs met, right? And we can help people

in our surroundings and fulfill a social mission." I think that works very well. What are the fundamental aspects of social entrepreneurship? Social entrepreneurship is constantly striving to balance the three fundamental aspects of its mission, which are achieving economic success. And I don't have economic success, and I repeat, no matter how altruistic, how much of a leader I am

, how much I have a heart of gold, how much I want to help people, if I can't, if I don't have the money, if I don't have the cash, if I don't have the dollars, if I don't have anything, I can't sustain my business, whatever it is I start, whether it's collecting, let's say, I've always

thought that here we need a good plastic collection center , for example, or a good recycling center. If I don't have a good recycling center and I can't maintain it and make it profitable, and I can't pay the payroll or social security, I can't do it. And so, look, I can't achieve it

because even though everything is fine, even though I have my social objective and everything is planned, I have to achieve financial success because I can't live on love alone, right? So, that's important, achieving financial success. That's one of the three fundamental aspects of the mission. Its reason for being is based on social responsibility. I have to be

responsible. I can't just say, well, let's help the children, uh, let's say with cookies, and the cookies are healthy, and I bring them the cookies wrapped in plastic, right? There's a lack of responsibility there because the cookies have to be in a wrapper that I also have to think about because it's like a combination of things. What kind of

wrapper am I going to make? Right? I mean, it can't be a plastic wrapper because I'm simply working on the environment and society. I'm helping children with a very nutritious cookie, and I'm creating a business model where I 'm selling the cookies elsewhere, but I'm creating a business model where they buy one, I give one away. One, but I

bring the cookie in a plastic package, so I'm not doing everything right. I've gone off track. My reason is, I have to have that social and environmental responsibility, that commitment to the environment. So, there's the triple impact at a global level. Globally, I think as of December of last year, there were 5,000

certified B Corporations, that is, triple impact companies that had achieved these three fundamental aspects: economic success, social responsibility, and commitment to the environment. 5,000 at the national level, and to this day we only have one company. One, there are n't any others, and it's not even a bank, right? Not even anything. It's a

company that was born in San Pedro Sula, and I think it's a technology company. I think they've already opened their headquarters here in Tegucigalpa. Guatemala has many more B Corporations. Then I think Costa Rica follows, and in Nicaragua I think there's an organic B Corporation, but we have one. So this issue is fundamental. Look at how the world is.

Look at the News. How many social and environmental problems there are. How many people are dying of hunger. How many fish are there? There are series on Netflix where, if you don't know, if you're living in a bubble and have never realized the reality we're in , look, there's one called Cpiracy and another called Cpiracy, one about the

sea and the other about cows. Here, they're planting more crops to feed animals than people. And it's absurd, and it doesn't serve a social purpose, and it's a reality, and you need to know it. A massacre of fish in the oceans, killing fish that don't even have nutritional value, just because of beliefs.

What am I doing socially? How am I taking care of the environment? What kind of things can I do? A blog, a podcast, who do I team up with, who are my allies? There are so many things I can start doing. How many YouTube channels can I create? Start to, what's it called?, learn about things, go to

villages, visit them, learn about different ethnic groups, so many things I can do to improve things. And not be a Luis Comunica, right? A little Luis Comunica, which isn't what I am. Well, he does his communication function, right? But more in a social environment. How can I do it? My students in innovation and social entrepreneurship and I

are currently working on... well, we started a podcast for the program, a social entrepreneurship podcast, and what we want is to reach entrepreneurs so they can learn, or, like in these diploma programs, so they can understand what social entrepreneurship is .
