Hello everyone, and welcome back to Bookish English. I'm Ariel. Today, I have a very special story for you. It is about a girl who follows a white rabbit, falls down a very deep hole, and finds a world where nothing makes sense. In this world, a cat can disappear and leave only its smile. A tea party never
ends. A queen shouts "Off with her head!" about everything. And the little girl has to stay calm and polite in the strangest place she has ever seen. The story is called Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It was written by an English writer named Lewis Carroll more than 150 years ago. It is one of the most famous stories in
the English language. Children love it, and adults love it, too. Today, you will hear it in simple English, in my own words, slowly and clearly. Why learn English with this story? There are three good reasons. First, you probably know the story already, at least a little. When you already know a story, it is
much easier to follow it in a new language. Second, the story is full of fun, and fun is the best teacher. You will laugh, and you will remember the words. Third, many English speakers use phrases from this story every day, like down the rabbit hole, mad as a hatter, and a Cheshire cat smile.
After this video, you will understand these phrases, and you will know where they come from. Here is how the video works. There are eight chapters. In each chapter, I tell you one part of the story. Then I teach you a few new words and one small tip about English. Then I ask you
easy questions and give you a short speaking job. If you press pause and speak, you will learn much more than if you only listen. So, please speak with me. One honest note. This is my own retelling with simple words. The original book is longer and it has a beautiful old English style that is not easy for learners.
