So, are you ready? Well, let's get started. The Surprise Party. An A2 B1 English story with vocabulary explanations at the end.
Mrs. Brown was our neighbor. She was 80 years old and everyone in the street liked her. She was always kind and friendly. She smiled at people every day and liked talking to her neighbors. She worked in her garden and grew beautiful flowers. Sometimes she gave people fruit, vegetables, or biscuits. Mrs. Brown's birthday was in July.
Her son and daughter lived far away, so they could not come to see her. Mrs. Brown did not tell many people about her birthday because she did not want a big party. She thought it would be a quiet day at home. One day, my mom found out that Mrs. Brown was going to be 80.
We thought it was a very special birthday. We did not want her to spend the day by herself. We wanted to do something kind for her. We decided to have a surprise party. We did not tell Mrs. Brown because we wanted it to be a secret. We asked the other neighbors if they
wanted to help. Everyone said, "Yes." Some people bought balloons and flowers. Other people made sandwiches and brought drinks. One family brought fruit. Another family brought crisps. Everyone wanted to help because Mrs. Brown had always been kind to them. My mom knew that Mrs. Brown's favorite cake was chocolate cake. We decided to make one for her.
We got flour, butter, sugar, eggs, milk, and cocoa powder. We mixed everything in a big bowl. Then, we put the cake into the oven. Soon, the whole house smelled of chocolate. When the cake was cold, we put chocolate icing on the top. We added a few strawberries and a candle with the number 80.
