Good evening. We're going to begin Unit 2 with this video. The first text we're going to analyze is Alberti's "The Window" and the cognitive subject. We have many concepts to work with here, but we'll start with the question that opens this text: How does a painter paint the background of a painting? And why are we going to talk about art? In this

case, we'll start by talking about painting specifically. Well, first, because the difference between art and science and philosophy, while they are different things, different ways of knowing, we can think that there are often certain principles that run through them and that different cultures present themselves in these forms in certain ways. So, when we question ourselves, for

example, about a painting, where are the deepest philosophical beliefs of that artist expressed in the scene they are painting, or in the background, in the way they paint the background, where they place those beliefs? And here we're going to see that the scene isn't so important for revealing that philosophical belief; rather, we're going

to pay more attention to the background. There are certain varieties of backgrounds that can be perceived, for example, in the period. of the Roman Empire and where Christianity first emerged, what could be called early Christianity. There, if we look at the paintings, the background is flat; that is to say, there is no

illusion, no illusion of depth, for example. It is flat, it is monochromatic in general, and it would be good if you accompanied this video with a series of slides that I have uploaded.
