PSYC 3610 – Lecture 4

hi everyone so this is lecture 4 before I begin stop what you're doing and make sure that you have done the worksheet that I had posted so there was a worksheet that you need to complete before you watch this lecture or read the chap Associated chapters in the book so if you haven't done it yet stop this

go and do the worksheet cuz I'm going to refer to some of those questions in here and trust me it it'll all make more sense if you've attempted the worksheet on your own go go do it okay so today we're going to talk a little bit about these three things okay I'm just going to kind of really explain

them to you give you some other real world examples of them um your book has a chapter for each of them basically um so we're just going to kind of talk about what they are in terms of theistic in terms of how they affect our thinking and our judgment okay before before we get into them

specifically um there's two ways we can judge the probability of things occurring okay we could either use an algorithm all right which is doing it the correct way all right this could take typically takes more time it's more difficult but it guarantees a correct answer or we can rely on a heuristic which is essentially like a rule of

thumb okay these heris stics take less time easier um but there's no guarantee that the answer is correct okay now you're probably thinking like why would we ever rely on heuristics well keep in mind what we do to make our life easier right look at all our entire system one right everything we do is to

make life easier and so heris are just another shortcut or rule of thumb something that we can just use and rely on to make life easier all right we're not always going through algorithms and and I'll give you kind of examples as we talk about the different heris sixs we rely on what like an
