Week 2 1 2 3 Standard Form Implicit Premises

Hello everyone and welcome to the third class of the second week of public reasoning. Till now you have learned how to spot conclusions and premises. In this class we will build upon what you've learned to understand how to complete arguments by finding implicit or hidden premises and writing the argument in a standard form. Before we

get started, please keep a paper and pen handy. Please feel free to pause the video and take notes and try to solve the examples yourself before moving on to the solutions. Let's get started. So to write an argument in in a standard form, we follow the following steps. First of all, once we have the whole

text in front of us, we try to number the sentences or what we call propositions. These are sentences that make a single claim. Secondly, out of all these sentences, we try to figure out which one of them is the conclusion. I.e. which one it it is that the u author wants us to agree with us if we

follow through the argument. Lastly, once we have found the conclusion, what we try to do is we try to find all the sentences that provide one single support for the conclusion, right? When when taken together, they should provide one single support. Lastly, we put it in the standard form. Now, standard form basically means we just write it as P1,

P2, P3 and so on till the conclusion. We'll come to what it exactly means in an example that I'm going to take ne take up next. So just keep on watching. So let's start with this example.
