So, Anthropic says coding is no longer the bottleneck to building AI. They also say AI could soon replicate itself without needing a data center. And their co-founder Jack Clark just moved his prediction for full recursive self-improvement forward to potentially next year. So, between what Anthropic just published and the claims now coming out of these frontier labs, it appears
something big is happening behind the scenes. Let's get into it. All right, so let's start with this post from Anthropic titled redesigning source control at Anthropic. In it, they claim coding is no longer the bottleneck to building systems or doing research. Claude can now autonomously iterate on research loops, optimize complex programs, and build entire services on
its own. The bottleneck has basically shifted to the infrastructure supporting all that. Just look at this graph. In May, they were merging around 2,500 code changes per day. By September, that was over 30,000. So, roughly 12 times as many in just 4 months. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean 12 times as much progress or output, but it gives you an
idea of how quickly the scale of their development is changing. I mean, if you look at the first half of this year, they were merging only a few thousand changes a day at most. Now they're merging over 30,000. To handle this, they built their own version control system called Skon or Scion. This system
basically tracks and manages changes to their code. Apparently, seven people built it alongside a code review tool and several related systems, and they completed the migration in only 5 months with Claude helping throughout. In one example, they gave an early internal model a pipeline they largely written by hand and asked it to rewrite it. And
