give me a tip on how to improve my speaking?" This is the classic problem that everyone learning a language has, whether it's German or any other language. It's always a problem that we understand more than we can speak. And why is that? And how can we change it? I'd like to talk about that a little bit today,

share some thoughts with you, and also hold a short presentation. And the first question that always comes up is, "How do you actually learn German?" That's an important question, and the answer is usually something like this: " Yes, I watch a lot of videos, I listen to podcasts, I watch films, I do

this, I do that, I consume..." I do a lot, but somehow I still ca n't speak. [clears throat] I learn the grammar, I learn the vocabulary, I watch German films, I read German books. My whole life is already Germanized, but I can't speak. Yes, and that's usually the first problem you can identify.

Because when we consume content, when we watch videos, when we watch films, when we read books, when we do grammar exercises, when we listen to podcasts, then we train our understanding, and our understanding gets better and better. And we continue to train our understanding by reading even more books and listening to even more podcasts and

watching even more videos. And our understanding keeps getting better, but our speaking stays where it is. Our speaking does n't really improve. And that's because all this content we consume, all this content we understand all day long, doesn't translate into our speaking . That means we have two different disciplines here. That's what I always say.
