we turn to a historian, not an art historian or an architectural historian, Eric Ohn, a very famous historian who worked on the 20th century as well as the 19th century, and about the latter he defines it as the long 19th century, which he divides into three eras: The Age of Revolution, The Age of Capital, The

Age of Empire, and which, as we see, strictly speaking, begins before the 19th century proper and ends in the first years of the 20th century. We, as we had already mentioned, are going to concentrate on this first stage, the Age of Revolution, the revolution to which the revolutions... What this book actually refers to are

mainly two: the Industrial Revolution, which originated in England, and the French Revolution, which was simultaneous. Hound defines the moment of the Industrial Revolution's fullness, with its global impacts, as being around 1790. The French Revolution has its date, more precisely, marked on July 14, 1789, with that famous slogan of liberty, equality, and fraternity, but which,

officially, for many years was supplemented with "liberty, equality, fraternity, or death," as a clear sign of those times. This addition, this "or death," admits a double interpretation: on the one hand, it is worth dying for those ideals; at the same time, those who do not subscribe to them, as many knew through the guillotine, will face death for

their dissent. Now, in terms of art and architecture, Hound doesn't dedicate many lines, and those he does dedicate are quite descriptive regarding the painting and architecture produced in this era, attributing the cause of the double revolution—the Industrial and the French—to the two revolutions. Stagnation or exhaustion of the arts in this period, however, in the

images that accompany this slide, they challenge us to try to investigate. They belong to unrealized projects from the end of the 17th century in France. What was being done artistically and architecturally at this time? And for that, we will now turn to architects and historians of architecture and art: Pateta, Benevolo, and Hauser. Although they

are three clearly distinct books, they share the logic of presenting this period within a broader historiographical project. They cover large periods of history and therefore help us see how they present the 19th century in a concise way. If we start with Pateta, we will see that his presentation of the 19th century begins by

using Benevolo, whom we mentioned earlier and whom we will see in more detail, with a distinction between Neoclassicism and Historicism. This distinction will be a central axis of our talk. Then it continues with other authors who record architects and theorists of architecture from the For now, the idea of eclecticism isn't just about

Therefore, we are already seeing the difficulty of being so categorical in periodization, and how we have a certain continuity between centuries. This continuity can be

clearly seen in the distribution. What does Franton do with the themes of his book, *Critical History of Modern Architecture*, where we see that neoclassical architecture spans a period from 1750 to 1900, just as he also attributes the technical transformations towards the end of the 17th century? So this idea of continuity between neoclassicism

and historicism will be seen throughout the theory. Benevolo, on the other hand, proposes a perhaps more progressive, somewhat more compartmentalized logic, and he begins by explaining that in Enlightenment thought—that is, from the first half of the 17th century—this Enlightenment thought is able to clarify the exact scope and value of the formal rules of classicism. And in this way,

the precarious nature of the conviction that has dominated European architectural experience for a little over three centuries is revealed. That is to say, from a new approach to the formal rules of classicism and a more precise definition of those rules, it is discovered that the classicism inaugurated by The Renaissance was founded on a

precarious conviction, which calls into question everything we have seen up to this point in the program. Now, this Renaissance classicism, being called into question and with a more precise understanding of the formal rules of classicism, leads us to neoclassicism, that is, a new classicism. And this same procedure of precisely understanding the value of the rules of a

past style is immediately shown to be applicable to other repertoires drawn from other periods of the past. Benévolo mentions Neo-Gothic, Neo-Romanesque, and Neo- Byzantine. And that is what is known as historicism: bringing multiple styles from the past into the present. On the other hand, Hauser gives great importance to what we mentioned at the beginning as

Romanticism. For him, the French Revolution, although framed within this classicism or neoclassicism that Benévolo mentioned earlier, is the starting point, or rather, the point that enables the milestone that enables the emergence of Romanticism. He says the authentic stylistic creation of the Revolution is not this classicism but romanticism; that is, not the art it practiced

but the art it paved the way for. Why? Because the revolution, being so important in the freedoms it promoted to the bourgeoisie and social sectors that, in the old regimes, in the absolutist monarchies, were more restricted in their lives, that yearning for freedom, which was finally and victoriously achieved, enabled in the world of art those

romantic manifestations that we had discussed and mentioned at the beginning. So, if one looks, for example, at the Oath of the Horatii, which is a very well- known painting, a culminating work of neoclassicism prior to the French Revolution, and compares it with Liberty Going to the People, where we are already seeing a scene in Paris during the

revolutions of 1830, these coincide with the work of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, for example. Well, we are seeing that there is no allusion. It's not about the past, or any myth, or anything from Greek mythology to explain it; it's directly about the streets of Paris, the dead piled up. Anyway, I don't want to get into

details that I don't handle rigorously, but Hauser goes on to say that this struggle is for freedom, for letting oneself be carried away by passions, for breaking the rules, for denying that there is an artistic rule that has to govern the production of artists, etc. This struggle is inconceivable without the intellectual atmosphere created by the

revolution. To the revolution it owes both its genesis and its influence. However, to problematize or complicate the situation a bit, we have this quote from Argan, which we can find in Pateta's anthology, where he says, " When we look at David's Oath of the Horatii, that is, this essentially neoclassical work, we see the

attempt to make the characters obey a categorical imperative and to suggest this attitude to the viewer," and he says, "It is already a..." Contribution to the ideology of Romanticism, therefore, if we take Argan at his word, we see that Neoclassicism, even before the French Revolution, had sown the seeds of Romanticism, thus generating

a more diffuse transition between both currents.
