Fengge's video about Majukiao has finally been taken down. Since last week, quite a few people have been leaving comments under my videos, saying, Wang Ju, you should talk about Fengge's Majukiao video. But I've been a little hesitant, mainly for two reasons. The first reason is that Fengge himself said he shot over two hours of footage in Majukiao,
but there were parts he didn't even dare include. Because if he released them, someone would be in trouble. Either he'd get detained, or some people in the authorities would. So he didn't want to take that risk. In the end, he put together a toned-down, censored version that was just over 20 minutes long.
According to him, it was mostly leftover footage, just people eating, drinking, and stuff like that.
So when Fengge first uploaded his Majukiao video, it wasn't taken down. And it was getting a lot of views. After all, Fengge is one of the more influential bloggers in China right now, and his videos can easily get two or 3 million views. Some people have joked that I'm like the Grim Reaper,
calling out names from overseas. Whenever I talk about something a blogger in China has done, their content might get taken down, but if I keep quiet, it might stay up. So I thought, Fengge's video is still online. If I start talking about it and somehow get it taken down, that wouldn't be fair to him.
That was my first concern. The second reason is that I'm actually quite familiar with Majukiao. But after watching Fengge's 20-minute censored version, I honestly didn't think there was much to it. The video was pretty average. It didn't really dig into the heart of what Majukiao is all about. So I wasn't sure it was even worth discussing.
