Sinus lift is the name given to a specific bone augmentation procedure of the upper jaw. Years of tooth loss, periodontitis, and/or other diseases lead to a progressive loss of the tooth-supporting bone. Additionally, the maxillary sinus in the upper jaw becomes increasingly enlarged after tooth loss. Often, there is then insufficient bone available for implants to be held securely. Both the quality and

quantity of the existing jawbone are crucial for successful implantation. Today, numerous surgical techniques exist to gently and painlessly augment jawbone. The sinus lift procedure is a specific technique for the upper jaw. Through a small incision, the sinus membrane is lifted, and bone substitute material is inserted between the sinus membrane and the remaining bone.

Depending on the bone substitute material used, this is transformed into the patient's own bone within four to six months, at which point implantation is possible again. Depending on the quality and quantity of the remaining jawbone, implants can be placed immediately after the sinus lift procedure, or they can be placed some time after the

bone augmentation. A distinction is made between an internal and an external sinus lift. In an internal sinus lift, the sinus membrane is dissected through the implant site. In the resulting space, the implants are placed. Bone material is inserted into the cavity. The intact maxillary sinus mucosa prevents the bone material from entering the sinus from above. The internal

sinus lift is particularly suitable when only a few teeth need to be replaced. The external sinus lift is especially suitable when several teeth need to be replaced but very little bone remains. For this procedure, a small window is created laterally into the maxillary sinus. The bone substitute material is inserted through this window.
