How does the governor operate? The governor works automatically. As the engine speed increases, the centrifugal force on the fly weight of the governor increases. Fly weights expand outward. This reduces the fuel supply. When the engine speed decreases, the centrifugal force decreases. Fly weights come inwards. The fuel supply increases. Thus the governor maintains the engine speed almost constant.

Whether the load increases or decreases. No person, switch or control panel gives direct commands to the governor. The governor receives its command from changes in engine speed and through centripetal force. Hence the governor is called an automatic control device.
