This is the story of one of the longest and bloodiest revolutions in the Americas. The armed phase of the Mexican Revolution lasted from 1910 to 1920 and claimed nearly a million lives and exiles. The Mexican people—men, women, children, peasants, workers, soldiers, bourgeois, landowners, politicians—all fought alike against and for a central power to create the country we know today.

[Applause] [Applause] The Mexican Revolution began as a proposal for political change, but this political revolution quickly encompassed other social demands. These social demands were primarily concerned with the country's main problem: the agrarian question. The Mexican Revolution was the first social revolution of the 20th century, and it cannot be understood without considering the

experience of, for example, the Russian Revolution. It offers a broader perspective on what was envisioned as the dawn of a new era. [ Music] Perhaps some of the reasons for the Revolution can be traced back to the government of Porfirio Díaz. This general of the Mexican army was a presidential candidate. Twice, in

1867 and 1871, defeated on both occasions by Benito Juárez, he took up arms, failing in his first attempt. Finally, in 1876, he managed to seize power, thus beginning a new period in Mexican history that would last more than 30 years and was called the Porfiriato. The dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz had been a degenerative phenomenon in which

not only a pyramidal, one-person power structure was increasingly consolidated, but also a series of situations of super-exploitation and abuse linked to this power structure.
