[Music] Now, if you are just getting a new puppy, it is probably one of the most exciting times in your life and you know that you need to train it so that you have a well-behaved canine companion when they're older. And one of the best ways to do that is to create daily

habits, things that you can do with your puppy every single day that sets you and them up for success. And here at my canine academy, me and my expert teams help people with this every single day. And in this video, we're going to talk about the things that you should be doing with your puppy.

[Music] As a clinical canine behaviorist, my job is helping dogs with the worst behaviors when things have gone terribly wrong. But I actually prefer to help people be proactive and avoid things going wrong in the first place. If I could put myself out of a job, then I've done my job here on YouTube. And as someone who

has seen things go wrong countless times, I can summarize the two most important things that you need to do with your dog. For helping behaviors outside of the home, loose lead walking. For behaviors inside the home, crate training. They are the two mandatory things in my training system that every client I work with must agree to do. And

the reason that they are mandatory is because I truly believe that those two things prevent and solve 99% of problem behaviors that regular owners with their dogs come across. And when it comes to crate training, what we want is for our dogs to willingly go into their crates when we ask them to. And when they're in

their crate for them to understand that it is a safe, happy place for them to be, to settle down, relax, and unwind. We need to create that environment for them. And if we can do so, you are going to be setting your crate training up for huge amounts of success. Now, I'm going

to hand you over to one of our expert trainers here at our canine sanctuary to talk more about the next important thing about crate training. So guys, one of the most important things that you want to start doing with your puppy every single day is just using a crate. Crate training is super

important because a crate gives your puppy a nice, quiet, safe place to sleep and decompress from any of the training or activities that you're going to be doing with them every single day. Sleep is actually such an important thing for puppies, and in actual fact, most puppies are going to need to sleep up to

20 hours a day, which is something that a lot of people don't even think about. And the crate is the best place for your puppy to do that because it's somewhere that they can do it quietly and privately, and they're just not going to get disturbed while they're in there. So, what we're going to do with Chunk is

we're going to make the crate seem like it was his idea. So, what you don't want to do is just pick your puppy up and throw them in the crate straight away. You also don't want to force them in the crate in any type of way, either. What you should be doing is you should make

the crate a fun place that the puppy has decided to go into sort of off their own accord. But obviously, what we are going to be doing is using a bit of food to help us along the way. So, what I'm going to do with Chunk before he falls asleep here is I'm going to show him

this little piece of food, and I'm just going to pop it into the crate. He's going to go into the crate to eat the food. All puppies are going to be slightly different. Some puppies are going to be a little bit wary. Some puppies might not actually like going into the crate, especially if you've got

a crate kind of similar to this one that's a little bit darker, or you have a wire crate that you pop the cover on. Sometimes, just going into that dark space can be a little bit intimidating for those puppies. So, for those puppies, you might just have to take a little bit more time. But what you

should not be doing is trying to force them in. So, don't shove them in. Really think about this. Think about making the puppy feel like it was their idea to go into the crate. So, if I just pop him out with one more time, what I'm going to do is this time, I know he did get

all the way in there because he's a bit of a pro at this now. We're going to throw the food all the way into the back there for him. He's going to go all the way into the back. And sometimes, what a puppy's going to do is they're going to just try and run

straight out. So, we'll go straight onto that because what Chunk isn't doing is running straight out. But what I'll do is I'll just talk you guys through what you would do if your puppy did do that. And all you would simply do is you would just block the doorway with your body. So, as your puppy's trying to come out,

you just want to very gently approach the entryway and just block the doorway, and your puppy will naturally back off a little bit. When they back off a little bit because you block the doorway, you can reward them, and then you can move away from the doorway. If they try to get out again, you just block the

doorway again. What I'll do is I'll see if I can cheat ever so slightly here with Chunk, and I'm just going to give him the idea that I want him to come out. It's going to be a little bit of a cheat for him. So, I'm just going to see. He's so comfortable in there, he just wants to

go to sleep. So, I'm just going to see if I can encourage him to come out just so I can block that doorway to show you guys how that would look. And we'll just block the doorway. And what you can see is naturally, he's just going to fall back into the crate. When he does that, I'll

reward. And then over a long period of time, what you're going to do is you're just going to increase the distance away from the crate, and then you'll come back in if they stay, and you're going to reward. And then what you start doing is experimenting with shutting the door. If you've got a wire crate, you can shut

the door. The dog can still see you. That's absolutely fine. You can start raining treats through the top of the crate. Or in a crate like this, you'll just start poking them through the sides just to show the dog that when the door is shut, it's still good. It's still safe. It's still calm. And then as soon

as you've got the dog to the point where they're quite happy to be in there, and you can close the door, and you can walk away from it, at that point, you want to start phasing out how much food you're putting into that crate because ultimately, we do want the crate to be a

quiet space. We do want the crate to be a space that the dog settles and goes to sleep. So, once you've got them in, and once they're quite happy to just sit there, at that point, you start phasing out the rewards. You kind of stop making a big deal about going in the crate. You

just pop them in there. I'll just block the doorway there just to show you again. So, just to stop him from getting out. But as soon as they're more comfortable in there, you just shut the door, walk away, and they should be able to sleep in the crate, especially if they're tired. So, another thing that you should be

doing with your puppy every single day is making sure that they are always on a lead, inside your house and outside of your house. For the same reason as you would have your dog outside on a lead, you want a dog inside on a lead as well. And that reason is so that your dog

can't just wander off and get themselves into things that they shouldn't be. So, I've just put a few things out to sort of demonstrate to you guys why having your dog on a lead is super important. Now, I just want you to imagine that all of these toys dotted around me here are

things in your house that you might not want your little puppy getting involved with. These are things like your slippers. These are things like your skirting boards. These are things like the chair legs in your dining room. You want to make sure that you've always got your puppy on a lead, not leading them

around. You don't want to be dragging them around or anything, but you want to just make sure that you can guide them away from the places that they're not supposed to be. So, I'll walk around with Chunk right now, and he's on the lead, and I'm kind of just going to let him go where he wants to go. And when he

starts venturing to a place that I don't want him to go, I'm going to give him a little bit of pressure on this lead to just stop him from moving any closer to that thing. So, he's getting a little bit weirded out by the fake dog. Now, he I don't want him to get this one. So,

I'm just going to give him a little bit of pressure, and I'm going to call him. Chunk. Good boy. And I'm going to reward him with food for moving away from that item. Now, the whole purpose of having the dog on the lead isn't to drag him around and force him into different

areas. It's to give him the freedom to explore, but to make sure that you're always there supervising him and guiding him in the right direction all the time. For me, having a dog on a lead is like holding the hand of a child. Obviously, we can't hold a dog's hand, but what we

can do is we can hold the lead, and we can do it in exactly the same way, and just use that lead to guide them away from certain things, and show them the places that we want them to be. So, this is what I'm doing right now. So, he's getting a little bit interested into

that dog, and I'm just going to guide him away from the dog. And then I'm going to walk him over here. We're going to just sort of wander over here to this ball. I don't want him to have that ball. So, I'm going to use the lead to stop him where he is. And then when he

moves towards me, I'm going to give him some food. Now, I would do this with a puppy inside my house, and I would do this with a puppy in my garden. So, in the house, it's going to be a 3 to 5 ft lead, and in the garden, we might have something much longer. But the concept

is exactly the same. It's just supervising the dog, making sure that when they go into those areas, maybe it's in your garden, and it's a flower bed or something that you don't want them to get into, and you're just going to use that lead to create the end of the line, and just say, "That's as far

as you can go. I would like you to move back towards me." And as soon as they move back towards you, you're going to reward them for it. Over time, what you'll be able to do is you'll successfully be able to call them away from these things without using the lead. But until you're at that point

where you can verbally say, "Come this way." and the dog listens to you, you should have them on a lead. Now, I know having your puppy on a lead all the time might feel excessive. But as Ben just talked about, it can be hugely beneficial. But the reality is is that you don't have to do that forever.

And I understand that you might be asking the question of, "Well, when should we do things? When should we start things? What point should I do this? At what point should I do that?" Let's go back to Ben and look

at what the next thing you should be doing with your puppy every single day is. Every single day you spend with your new puppy, you should spend it hand feeding them. Now, hand feeding is something that is overlooked by so many people and it's such a valuable thing that it's a huge mistake to do so. You have to think

of it like this. Every single moment you spend with your puppy is a moment that you are shaping their behavior and the best way to shape positive behaviors is by saying that was amazing, I want you to do that again, have this piece of food. If we're always there to do that, the puppies will be way more inclined to

do the things that we want them to do. So, if you're bowl feeding your dog, you're actually wasting lots of opportunities to feed them for the things that they're doing right every single day. So, you could argue and say, well, why don't I just give my puppy treats and then feed them their food

from the bowl? That's all well and good, but a lot of the time what that's going to do is it's going to make a puppy that's actually overweight or it's going to make a puppy that maybe isn't as food motivated as you could have them be if you were just hand feeding their meals.

At the start of every single day, I will weigh out the puppy's exact allowance of food and I will pour it all into my treat pouch. Then throughout the day, all of those little things that they do that I like, I'm going to reward them with a little piece of the food that

they would have got anyway. Right at the end where we've done all of our training and all of the activities that I had planned for them then that day, if there's any food left in my pouch, maybe then what I would do is I put a little bit in a bowl and I would give it to

them in their crate. But that being said, the time what I'd actually do is I'd get them out of their crate and I'd get them doing some basic obedience just to work through that last little bit of food and then I put them in their crate to sleep. So, hand feeding is one of

those things that is super super overlooked. Not enough people do it and it's something that is extremely valuable because if you have a dog that is extremely motivated by food because the only way that they can get it is from your hand and through the things that you're showing them how to do,

you'll have a dog that is super super keen and eager to learn. So, this is the final thing that I'd be doing every single day with a puppy and that is just making sure that that puppy sees me as the most amazing thing in the whole world. I mean, I'm going to be the

source of everything that is good for that puppy and that leads straight on from what I was saying about hand feeding. So, we're always going to be the one that's got the food. We're always going to be the one that's got all of the good things. So, that's going to be something that we're always going

to make sure that we have our treat pouch on. We've always got our pockets stuffed full of food and we're always ready to just get that puppy knowing that the food is over here. The next thing that I like to do is I like to play with puppy a lot. So, I don't like

the puppy to go off and kind of play with their toys on their own too much. Obviously, there'll be a little bit of time where I'll allow them to do that. Obviously, I'm not going to be a complete Scrooge, but a lot of the time actually what I want is for the puppy to

know that I'm even going to bring the access to the toys too. So, I'll be the one that just brings a toy out randomly and then I'll be the one playing with them and what you'll start to get is you'll start to get a puppy that looks at you for access for these things and

rather than them going and getting a toy and finding it in the corner or if you're free feeding your puppy from a bowl, they just go, oh, I'm hungry, let me go get the food. What they'll start to do because every time you just miraculously appear food or miraculously a ball comes out of your pocket, the

dog's going to start looking at you to say, hey, have you got that thing that I really love? Can you bring it out because I'd love to play with you or do you know what? I'm a little bit hungry and then what you can then do is once you get a dog starts doing that,

naturally a dog that's now looking at you more, you can start shaping different behaviors. So, that's when you can start adding in your obedience and that obedience will come through this desire to just pay attention to you because you are the source of all things good. So, like now for example, we've got this ball out and we're just playing

with this ball having a great time, but if I wanted to just add in some obedience and I wanted to teach him a new skill, I could raise this ball up. He's going to sit. I can start playing with him again. So, what Chunk's doing is playing with this ball, but what I'm

actually doing is using this ball as a means to have Chunk's attention. So, now I can start teaching him things like sitting and I can also teach him things like coming towards me. So, if I'm standing up, if he's holding onto this toy and he's really pulling on it, that's all well and good, but I can

teach him a little drop here. So, I'll just hold the toy nice and still. This is another skill that we'll be teaching him is how to let go of things. That's really good. The game starts straight away. We can also start teaching Chunk how to just follow our movement. So, we can move around. Chunk's having a great

time following me. Super super interested. This is actually part of a recall. So, making sure that you are always the one that holds everything that is the most amazing thing to your dogs. So, all of the fun, all of the food, everything like that. If you are the one that has the keys to the kingdom

in every single aspect of your dog's life, what you'll start to get is a puppy that is looking at you all the time just waiting for good things to happen. And let's face it, you equaling awesome to your puppy is at the root of what you want to achieve in your relationship with your dog. If you make sure that
