My name is Jenny. I am 33 years old. I have a husband. His name is Harland. He is 35 years old. Harland was a good man. He worked hard, loved me, and always tried to make me smile after a long day. But there was one person who I could never make happy, his mother, Marta.
From the first day I met Marta, I knew she did not like me. When I first visited her house, Marta said, "You're very pretty, Jenny." Then she looked at my simple dress and said, "Harland could have married someone with a better sense of style." I thought she was joking. I was wrong. Still, I tried very hard to become a
good daughter-in-law. I called her every Sunday. I visited her when she was sick. I never asked Harland to choose between us. I only wanted Marta to accept me. Then one morning, Harland came home with some bad news. He said, "My mother isn't feeling well. The doctor wants her to rest for a few weeks."
I looked at him. I said, "Is she okay?" Harland said, "She will be fine, but she needs someone to help her at home." Harland held my hand. He said, "Jenny, would you stay with her for a little while? I have to travel for work, maybe two or three weeks." He wanted me to take care of his mother.
I smiled. I said, "Of course, she's your mom." The next morning, I went to Marta's house. The first day, I cleaned the house, cooked dinner, and washed the dishes. The next morning, Marta woke me at 6:00. She said, "Jenny, where is my breakfast? It is 6:00 in the morning." I got out of
bed and made eggs and toast. After breakfast, Marta gave me a list. She said, "Go to the store. I need these things and clean the bathroom before you leave." I nodded. "Okay." That afternoon, I returned with the groceries. Marta looked through the bags. She said, "You forgot the coffee." I said, "I didn't see it at the store.
