When it rains on a mountain, some of the water seeps into the ground, moving down through rocks and layers of sand. Upon reaching a less permeable layer of clay, the water collects and begins to move sideways. It travels underground for days or months until it reaches a slope where that layer is exposed. Then
, the water emerges from between the rocks and forms a small spring. As long as water keeps arriving from the higher areas, the spring can continue to flow even during the dry season.
