Michael Sheen gives evidence to MPs on 'DEADLY' soil contamination in Wales

I came across the story of a man called Douglas Gowan, who had spent his life, it seemed, um, having first of all in the mid-60s, um, uh, as a younger man working for the National Union of Farmers, um, he had been, uh, there'd been a call from a farmer in the Grosvenor area near

Llantrisant, uh, farmer who had seen strange things happening to his livestock, aborted fetuses, malformed fetuses, dead, um, uh, crayfish and such in the in the streams, um, and wanted someone to come and investigate. Douglas Gowan went out to investigate. Um, uh, he tells a very powerful and emotional story about finding a lamb

who was, deformed, dying, no genitalia, um, and he then discovered that there was a quarry nearby, Brofiscin Quarry, disused quarry quarry that was being used for for dumping from the Monsanto factory in Newport, uh, dumping what turned out to be canisters of something called PCB, polychlorinated biphenyls. Uh, and Douglas spent many, many years after

that testing, finding out what PCBs were, um, and slowly piecing together a story that seemed to indicate that the dumping of these PCBs, uh, in Brofiscin Quarry was leading to it leaching out and affecting the local farmers' livestock, uh, and contaminating what was happening there. So, Douglas then took that story on because he believed there should be

accountability, um, and responsibility taken, and that led to a huge saga just around that Brofiscin Quarry site. Um, anyway, on that day when I was reading up about this and finding out a bit more about Monsanto as a company, uh, both historically and, uh, in the years ahead. um, was struck by two things.
