hello everybody so this is lecture [Music] three today is actually going to be a pretty short lecture um I'm going to be discussing some of the terms and Concepts that your book talks about in chapter 7 and just kind of elaborating on some of those um and I'm also going to be talking about
emotions and I want to give you just a kind of basic understanding of emotions and kind of how they impact our thinking and our behaviors um because it is discussed in chapter nine and so I want to give you a bit of a background of how kind of a bit more about emotions
okay first I really want to talk about this quote from your book for a minute okay um this is in chapter 7 and what Conan says is jumping to conclusions is efficient if the conclusions are likely to be correct and the cost of an occasional mistake is acceptable and if the jump saves much time and
effort so conman says this when he's discussing system one and how it's a machine for jumping to conclusions right but I want you to really think about how all of our mental shortcuts all those things that we're doing continuously automatically effortlessly okay are is really like this okay um and I kind of
want to break this sentence down a bit so first if it's efficient if the conclusions are likely to be correct now this part is important because just like I told you before like we evolve and we adapt and we still do these everything that we still do because it has helped us in our survival right we still rely
on a lot of these mental shortcuts on these jumping to conclusions on um all of those system one processes because they're likely to be correct and I think that that's really important they're not perfect they're not always correct but there's a good chance that they are and that's why we still rely on them yes
