Once again Narendra Modi has surrendered before Donald Trump. It happened 2 days ago. The government passed a new bill in the Lok Sabha according to which banks and payment providers will now be able to charge fees on UPI transactions. It is being said that this fee will be collected from shopkeepers and merchants

and it will not make any difference to the general public. UPI will still be free for them. But the fear is that these merchants may indirectly recover the cost from the consumers by imposing new fees. But do you know the most shocking thing, why was this new bill brought? Does the government want to levy new tax even when every payment is made? The answer to this is not what

you are thinking, friends. Actually, according to Indian Express, Donald Trump's pressure and trade deal are the big reasons behind this. In March 2026, the US State Representative declared digital payments like UPI as a foreign trade barrier and said that US companies like Visa and Mastercard do not get equal opportunity in the UPI ecosystem as Rupee.

Actually friends, companies like Visa and MasterCard were incurring losses due to UPI because UPI is free and in Visa and MasterCard companies charge fees from the merchant on every transaction. Till now, the biggest achievement of this government was that something like UPI was implemented. But now this same government is bent on ruining its own digital success story.

Just so that Trump can be pleased by benefiting some American companies. And this is not the first time. Earlier, under pressure from this trade deal, the Modi government had removed the 6% Google tax. Which was imposed on American companies like Google, Amazon and Meta for digital advertising. Similarly, foreign data centres have also been exempted from tax till 2047.
