[music] Hello, how are you? My name is Patricio Gómez Lavera, I am a teacher of the subject of society and state. [suppressed scream] In this video we are going to see a concept that we usually use in our daily conversations with family, friends, and acquaintances, and that we use interchangeably with others, which
is the word/concept of society. What do we mean by society when we talk about society? We all have an idea about this concept based on our everyday experience. However, in social sciences, the concept requires precise definitions to distinguish it from terms such as community, individual, or even citizen. Society is the group of people
who live under the same state. Social complexity demands differentiating between a person, a subject with human rights. universal rights of citizen, a subject of rights granted by a state. Being a citizen implies a set of rights guaranteed institutionally, precisely by institutions, by rules and by laws. According to Aren Shelin, citizenship is an arena of dispute. Rights
expand historically, but they do not expand spontaneously; rather, they do so through recurring social struggles over time. Recognizing new rights implies changes in the distribution of power, and changes in the distribution of power imply changes in the distribution of material and symbolic resources. It involves political decisions and pugnacious fighting, fighting and confrontation between
groups interested in hoarding more resources. The modernity we live in promotes individuation. The neighborhood club replaced by the WhatsApp group, the retreat to private life. We don't go to a pizzeria anymore, we order food through an app. Authors such as Tocville and Durheim emphasize the importance of citizen participation in sustaining a democratic society.
