[Music] Welcome back. So this is the second slide set in the Computer Amate chapter. So since the chapter was long, we divided it into two slide sets. This is, otherwise, the fourth lecture in this series. So, we had promised to discuss a couple of things. We had promised to discuss division and floating-point operations, namely
addition, multiplication, and floating-point division. So, let's now move on to divide. So, let's only consider positive numbers in our discussion because dividing negative numbers is kind of tricky. Well, it's tricky in the sense that we need to first understand that when we're doing integer division and dividing a negative number, there are different conventions for
the remainder. As a reminder, you know, the sum convention is always positive. As a reminder, the sum convention has the same sign as the divisor. So, actually, what most libraries and processors would do is So they would first convert the numbers to positive numbers do the division with positive numbers and then adjust the reminder
according to the convention so again there are different ways of doing it but let's just stick to positive numbers in our discussion because number one is simpler since division is a terribly long operation and it's not possible to have long time algorithm very easily it's okay to convert negative numbers to positive do the division and then adjust the
science so let's now introduce some basic terminology the terminology is like this that no we are dividing sorry let's say that we are dividing n by d right so this is the same as inside division n divide by d so in this case we have a q and a reminder for example if i divide 5 by the q is
