In behavioral psychology, intermittent reinforcement occurs when rewards are given inconsistently or unpredictably. This means you don't know when or if you will receive affection, attention, or validation. And it is precisely this unpredictability that creates a type of
emotional dependence that is difficult to break. This phenomenon has been identified in studies involving animals and humans.
