By becoming human in His love for us, to identify with us, to share in our fallen state, and to experience human existence in all its fullness—with the exception of sin—Jesus personally identifies with you. On a level that would not be possible if He didn’t become flesh, He experienced what we experience so that He now sympathizes with you because He knows firsthand what it’s like to be human.

To have a human body that is weak, that decays, that suffers, and can die. What do I mean? Let’s unpack this. You guys got about 10 minutes? Luke 2:21-24 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, He was named Jesus, the name the angel had given Him before He was conceived.

When the time came for the purification rites required by the law of Moses (Leviticus 12:1-8), Joseph and Mary took Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord. As it is written in the law of the Lord: “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord.” And to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the law of the

Lord—a pair of doves or two young pigeons. Well, wait. Leviticus 12:8 “But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons—one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way, the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.”

So, if she’s poor, she brings either two doves or two young pigeons. What did Mary bring? A pair of doves or two young pigeons. Meaning Jesus chose to be born into a family so poor they couldn’t afford a lamb. Now watch how deep it gets. In reality, she did bring a lamb. Her son is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

So you see the irony? Mary already had her own lamb, and she brought her Lamb—her son—who’s the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Is that amazing? Jesus willfully, voluntarily chose to be born in a poor family. Not only that. Jesus could have chosen an adoptive father whose vocation was less taxing, but He deliberately chose Joseph, a carpenter.

You know what that means? From the time Jesus had reached puberty—was post-pubescent—He would have to learn His father’s trade. Which means Joseph was a stone mason, a carpenter. That means He would have to get up in the morning six days a week, carry huge stones, cut down trees, use hammers and nails, saws to fashion and shape trees or logs into tables,

into chairs, or take stones and put one stone on another to build homes and doors. Back-breaking, busting work. And Jesus did it from the time He was pubescent until the time He began His earthly ministry at the age of 30. That means at least from the age of 13 to 30, Jesus was engaged in back-breaking,

back-busting work six days a week—in the heat and in the cold—and did not complain. Is it ironic? The vocation He chose—a carpenter—builds, fashions, and creates. And Jesus is the original carpenter, because He built, fashioned, and created the earth as a home for Him to live in. So, the divine carpenter becomes a human carpenter.

You see the irony here? Light switch going on? Not only that. We’re told in Mark 3:20-21 and Mark 3:31-35 and John 7:1-7 that Jesus’s family members thought He was crazy—out of His mind—and wanted to take Him by force and pretty much lock Him up at home. And in John 7:1-7, we’re told that His so-called brothers wanted Jesus

to show Himself publicly so that He would get arrested. They were ashamed of Him. Not only that. One of His best friends betrayed Him for 30 pieces of silver—handing Him over to be arrested and killed. Not only that. His best friends abandoned Him in His time of need. Not only that. His mother saw Him hanging naked on the cross, dying before her eyes,

and He had to be buried in some stranger’s tomb. Okay, you want me to go a little deeper on the implications of all this? Okay, now let me show you why He did that. Watch here. Hebrews 2 “For this reason He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful

high priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.” Now watch here. Hebrews 4:14-16 Pay attention to verse 15. Look what it says: “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who ascended to Heaven—Jesus, the Son of God—let us hold firmly to the faith we

profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses. We don’t have a God who is distant from us, who doesn’t know what it’s like to be one of us, to be like us. He became one of us and experienced what we experienced firsthand. So He is filled with compassion and He’s moved to sympathy when He sees you suffering.”

See that? Who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses? No. But we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin. Knowing that He loves you and became flesh and blood to experience what you experience in all its fullness—with the exception of sin—He sympathizes with

you and pities you because He knows what it’s like to be human in a fallen world. Knowing that, don’t be afraid to approach the Father. Knowing that you have such a high priest who identifies with you, let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, with boldness, and assurance—so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

That’s what Jesus does for us. Okay, you caught it? Now let me break down what it means. On the day of judgment—I’ve said this before, I’m going to say it again—this is Christmas. This is who the Virgin, that beautiful pure virgin—our mother, our Queen (may she pray for us)—gave birth to. When you stand before the Lord, you know what’s beautiful about the Lord?

There’s not something that you can bring up that He hasn’t experienced. So you cannot say to the Lord: “You do not know what it’s like to be born poor.” Really? “You do not know what it’s like to do back-breaking, back-busting work—splinters, freezing cold, scorching heat, smashing a hammer over your hand or foot,

bumping your head into the wall. You do not know what it’s like to have a toothache, earache, stomach pain—to go to the bathroom. You don’t?” Really? “I don’t?” “You don’t know what it’s like for people to accuse your mother of being illegitimate, questioning your birth, thinking that you were conceived and born out of wedlock?”

And the Lord’s going to smile at you. “You sure I don’t know what it’s like? Till this day, my blessed mother is slandered and accused. Just go read the Talmud—being called an adulteress, accused of conceiving me in sin out of wedlock, and that a Roman soldier fathered me.” That’s in the Talmud, by the way.

You cannot say to Him: “You do not know what it’s like to have family members ashamed of you, embarrassed by you, disgusted by you, or critical of you.” Again, the Lord will look at you and say: “You’ve not read my biography, have you? My own family members thought I was crazy—out of my mind—and were embarrassed by me. They came to

take me home so that I wouldn’t embarrass them because of the things I was saying and doing. Even those so-called brothers of mine wanted me to show myself publicly so I could get arrested. You sure I don’t know what it’s like?” “You do not know what it’s like to have your best friends abandon

you at your time of need, and your best friend betray you?” Again, the Lord’s going to look at you. “Are you sure you’ve read my story—my true story, my history? A man that I ate with, who slept next to me, whom I gave the power to do miracles in my name—cast out demons, raise the dead, heal the sick, get people saved—a man I put in charge of the money.

Judas. A man whom I loved. I even washed his feet, knowing he’d betray me—sold me for 30 pieces of silver. My best friends—on the night I got arrested—abandoned me and fled. You sure I don’t know what it’s like?” And here’s the thing that is the most painful. “Lord, You don’t know what it’s like for a parent to bury their

child—to see their child die before their eyes.” “This one—it’s me, beloved. I hung naked on a cross, gasping for air, beaten to a bloody pulp. I was whipped to the point that the skin on my back looked like shredded paper. Before me was my mother. My mother had to see her baby.” See, this is why when I talk about this, it breaks me up.

My mother saw me—her baby boy. I told you—it kills me when I think about it. The one she gave birth to. The one she carried. The one she burped. The one she fed. The one she bathed. The one whose hand she held as she taught him his first steps. The one she attended to when he was sick.

She saw her baby boy—her son—dying before her eyes, beaten to a bloody pulp, whipped to the point of death, spikes driven into His hands and feet. And she heard people mock her baby boy, mock her baby, spit on Him, insult Him as He died. So I don’t know what it’s like for a parent to bury their child?

My mother saw me die, and strangers buried me in their tomb. I know what you go through—more than you think. More than you know. And then the one question I would ask the Lord—and I know what His answer would be: “Why did You do it?” I imagine myself in a stadium, preaching, playing out the scene.

If the Lord is pleased for me to do it before I die, His will be done. The question I would have for Him—and I know the answer: Why? I gotta be careful. It kills me, man. Oh, why did You do this? Why create a world that You knew would break Your heart, cause You sadness and grief, and make You cry?

Why would You create a world that You didn’t need and put up with all this misery? The only answer you’re going to get—this is true. The only answer: “Because I love my creation. Because I’m in love with my creation. I’m in love with the world. I’m in love with humanity. And then he's going to look at you

and he's going to say because I'm in love with you. That’s why. That’s the only reason. I’m in love with you. That’s the answer. So now, let me end it with this. Do you understand the love of Christ? I don’t think you understand it. So let me help you understand it—and we won’t fully comprehend it.

Watch here. Here it is—right here, black and white. So, if you ask the Lord, “Lord, You knew that if You became man and died, the proof that Your death has been accepted is that death would be abolished and canceled, which means You’d have to rise back from the dead to prove You abolished death?”

“Yes.” “You knew this, right?” “Yes.” “But that means You knew You would never stop being human. You never cease being human. You never cease being a man. You never cease having a physical body of flesh?” “Yes.” “But You knew that by taking on a human nature—physical body—in that nature, that physical body would be limited, like all physical bodies will be limited?”

“Yes.” “And You still did it?” “Yes.” Why? Because I love you. That’s why I did it. So now, this is what Jesus’s body is like forever. And this is where we say, “Thank You, Most Blessed Theotokos,” because in accepting God’s will, you gave to our God—your God—our Savior—your Savior—His physical body of flesh and blood and bones, which He took from your holy, purified body.

And that is the body He took from your body that He used to save the world. So here it is. John 20:24-29 Watch—black and white. But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails—”

Notice. Wait, wait. If you’re telling me Christ has been raised physically, that means He still has that physical body with the holes in His hands from the nails and the hole in His side. Then I want to see it. I want to see that physical body myself. I’m not going to take your word for it.

So you’re telling me my Lord has been raised, and that physical body that was beaten, whipped, nailed, pierced, and buried—He’s now raised in that body? Well, if He’s been raised in that body, the holes will still be there in His hands and His side. I’ve got to see it and touch it. Now watch.

Jesus wasn’t there to hear Thomas’s request, but He already knew what Thomas wanted because, look—eight days later. After eight days, His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors had been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Now notice. He wasn’t physically there, but He knew what Thomas wanted, and He waited patiently.

Notice the Lord made Thomas wait. In other words, He’s teaching you—be patient. I know the right time to show up in your life to deliver you from your predicament. I know the right timing—not you. Just trust in My timing. Because He waited eight days. See it? Then He said to Thomas, “Bring your finger here and see My hands. Bring

your hand here and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Now, did you catch it? Jesus had that physical body with the holes in His hands and His side. He now dwells in heaven with His physical, glorified body—with the holes in His hands, His side, and His feet. And He’ll forever have those holes in His body—forever and ever.

Notice the Lord knew what Thomas wanted to see to be convinced—without Him being there physically. You know why? As man, in His glorified physical body, He’s in heaven. As God, He’s present everywhere. He’s aware of all things and hears all things. So, though He wasn’t there physically eight days earlier, as God, He was the one present,

overseeing the conversation—because He was the one sustaining them. The God-man. You see the love of Christ? He will go out of His way to give you the evidence you seek in order to stop doubting and believe in Him—because He doesn’t want you to perish. He wants you to be saved. Now watch. Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God.”

That is the confession of true faith. Jesus—the man—is the God-man. “My Lord, my God,” who became man and remains man forever. Now watch what Jesus says to us. Don’t be like Thomas. What does He say to us? Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who do not see and yet believe.”

In other words, He’s saying—don’t be like Thomas, where I have to appear to you to convince you. Take Me at My word. Trust the eyewitness testimony. Trust the Bible. Trust the Church, who’s been entrusted with the Bible. And trust the proclamation of the Bible and the Church that proclaims the message of the Bible to you.

And believe on the basis of their testimony. You see?
