The western side of Norway looks like a giant brain. But why? These stunning natural features are called fjords and tell a story of an ancient icy world. Millions of years ago during the ice ages, enormous glaciers covered much of Earth's surface, including Norway. These glaciers made of compacted ice and snow were incredibly powerful.
As they slowly crept across the land, their immense weight and movement carved deep valleys into the bedrock below. Over time, these glaciers sliced into the earth, creating U-shaped valleys. When the ice finally melted, sea water flooded the valleys, forming dramatic steep-sided inlets we now call fjords. Some fjords, like Songfjord, plunge to depths of over 1,300 meters, making them ideal places
for natural landscape cruises. Fjords aren't just isolated to Norway. They are found in many regions once impacted by ice age glaciation, such as Greenland, Canada, Chile and New Zealand to name a few.
