Saudi Arabia and Yemen are once again locked in a rapidly escalating conflict. The latest confrontation erupted when an Iranian aircraft carrying a Houthi delegation was returning to Sana'a after the funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran. But the journey ended in chaos when Yemen's internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government launched an attack on the runway at Sana'a International Airport.

Furious over the attack, Yemen's Houthis blamed Saudi Arabia and retaliated by launching missiles and drones at Abha International Airport. Saudi Arabia claimed it immediately activated its air defenses and intercepted the incoming Houthi missiles and drones. After nearly four years of relative calm following the 2022 truce, Saudi Arabia and Yemen are back on the battlefield.

Although Yemen is divided among several factions, its two main power centers are the internationally recognized government in the south and the Houthis controlling the north. The Houthis are backed by Iran, while the internationally recognized government is supported by Saudi Arabia. And the two sides have been locked in conflict for more than a decade.
