If you're a coach or consultant, here's how you can stop taking it personally when a client doesn't get results. If the trigger is your client going quiet, missing calls and not implementing, then the surface of motion is frustration and creeping failure. Physically, that's a tight chest and a knot in your stomach before you check in with them. But the deep fear here is that if they do not get the
result, then I'm probably not good at this. So the protest behavior is over explaining, doing the work for them or resenting them for not trying. But the real need here is separating your competence from their execution. Now if the trigger is a client saying that I don't know if this is working for me, then the surface emotion is defensiveness and trying to justify everything. Physically your
heart races and you're rehearsing your defense before they even say a word. And the deep fear is that if they're not satisfied, I fail and I'm probably not good at this. So the protest behavior is over delivering because of anxiety or making them feel responsible for not seeing the value. The real need is hearing feedback as information and not a verdict on your word. And yes, results
partly reflect on the coach. But generally ask yourself that is absorbing every setback as a reflection of your worth making you good at this or worse while you're doing it.
