They would sow crops and reap a harvest for six years, and then on the seventh year, they would let the land lie fallow. They would give the dirt a break.

Turns out this wasn't just about good farming practice for the ancient world. There was a spiritual and social dimension. They understood the importance of space and silence and rest. they understood the importance of margin. Even the land needed margin. Space between working, doing, speaking, and growing. And that margin wasn't lifeless or empty. In fact, things happen

under the surface that no one could see when they made space. In that fallow year, the soil would recover nutrients and wild plants, insects, and microbial life would replenish and it would be ready to go for another six years.
