The longest journey always begins with the first step. And in recovery, the first step is always the hardest. Think of a ladder. The first step is the biggest, the widest, the strongest, because everything else depends on it. Recovery is exactly the same. Your success doesn't depend on how many therapy sessions you've been to

or how many promises you make. It depends on how seriously you take the first step. Acceptance. Not just saying it, I guess I'm an addict. No, this has to come from deep down in your guts. I am an addict. That's not just an admission. It's the foundation that every other step is built on.

As a therapist, I've learned that recovery only begins when three powerful ingredients come together. Honesty, open-mindedness, willingness. Those are the ingredients that make up the how in recovery. Without them, people stay stuck. With them, people change. Because when you truly accept who you are, stop fighting reality and become willing to do whatever it takes, recovery stops being a dream and becomes a reality.
