When a child says no to every instruction, most parents make no the center of the moment. They repeat themselves. They explain. They negotiate. They ask again. Now the child learns that refusal delays expectation. So the issue is not the word no. The issue is that no has become a working strategy. Here's what to do instead. Starting at age two, before the moment, state the

rule once. When I ask you to do something, it happens. You do it or I help you. When they say no, say one sentence. You can do it now or I will help you. Then wait. No arguing, no countdown, no new deal. If they start, let them do it. If they don't, you help their body start the task.
